We offer Russian language notary service in Colorado Springs. A Colorado notary may notarize a document written in a foreign language, including a Russian language document. The notary must be able to communicate with the signer in a language they both understand. I have taken foreign language classes and can read and speak some Russian.
Whether the document is written in English or Russian, the notary does not read the Russian language document and does not provide any legal advice or legal opinions. If the Russian document is going to be used in the United States, the notary certificate may be in English or Russian.
If the Russian language document is going to a foreign country, such as Russia, the notarial certificate must be in English. That is because the notarized document will need to get an authentication certificate (Apostille) or certificate of magistracy attached by the Colorado Secretary of State (SOS). The SOS requires the notary certificate to be in English.
The customer must be able to tell the notary which type of notarial certificate to attach. A jurat is used for a sworn oath or affirmation to attest that the contents of the document are true and correct. An acknowledgment is used when the customer acknowledges that he/she has read the document, understands the purpose, and is signing the document voluntarily.
The notary must check for satisfactory ID and be able to communicate with the customer in English or Russian, without using a translator. The notary checks ID, willingness, and awareness.
Since Russian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, not the Roman alphabet, there may be a problem with a name or signature written in Russian if the form of ID is written in English. The customer must know if the document recipient will accept a printed name or signature written in Russian or English. For example, in Russian, the name Vladimir Putin is Владимир Путин.
If the customer has a Colorado driver’s license for ID, the printed name and signature would need to be written in English, so the notary can compare the name on the Russian document with the name on the ID.
I have notarized Russian documents for Russian speaking customers. They also spoke English, so we were able to communicate.
The Russian word for a notary is нотариус (notarius), which is the Latin word for a notary.
