Motor Vehicle Bill of Sale Notary

We provide Colorado Springs mobile notary services to notarize a bill of sale for a motor vehicle.  Buyers and sellers often find a motor vehicle bill of sale legal form on the internet.

Some of these forms may lack odometer mileage disclosure, required by Federal law to protect buyers.  Other forms lack the time of sale, and others lack a notarial certificate.

The bill of sale should include a certified or sworn statement from the seller that the odometer mileage number recorded on the form is true and correct.  This protects the buyer from purchasing a vehicle with excessive mileage.

36 Hour Rule

In Colorado, the bill of sale should include the date and time of sale.  When a sale occurs outside of normal business hours, such as a private sale, the buyer has 36 hours to proceed with registering the vehicle.  The 36-hour rule is the reason that the time of sale is required, in addition to the date of sale.

A jurat notarial certificate may be included to take a sworn oath or affirmation from the seller that the odometer mileage number is true and correct, and that clear title is being delivered to the buyer.

An acknowledgment notarial certificate may be included for the buyer to acknowledge that he/she is agreeing to buy the motor vehicle described in the document, under the disclosures, price, and terms stated.

Form DR 2173

There is no sample motor vehicle bill of sale form on the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website.  They used to have a Form DR 2173, but it is no longer available on the website.
