Digital Media Protection
Protects tablet PCs, cell phones, external hard drives, external solid-state drives (SSD), flash memory cards, USB flash drives, digital cryptocurrency hardware wallets, CDs, DVDs, and other electronic storage devices.
For example, Samsung USB 3.1 flash drive FIT+ temperature specifications are -13°F to 185°F (-25°C to 85°C) operating, and -40°F to 185°F (-40°C to 85°C) non-operating. The Ledger Nano S cryptocurrency hardware wallet has an operating temperature range of -13°F to 122°F (-25°C to 50°C). The recommended storage temperature for CDs and DVDs is 68°F, maximum temperature of 122°F, freezing temperatures should be avoided.
✔ Tip: Store your cryptocurrency hardware wallet recovery words by engraving the words onto a small metal sheet, or metal storage box, stored in your fireproof safe.
Electrical Testing Laboratory (ETL) Verified (by Intertek Group) to ensure internal temperatures remain safe for CDs, DVDs, and USB drives. (ETL Spec ID 39051, Report Number 102738065SAT-005, 102738065SAT-006)
✔ Tip: For an extra layer of protection, items may be placed inside a fireproof pouch or a metal storage container.
✔ Tip: Make scanned copies of important paper documents. Make multiple backup copies of digital files and store them in different locations, including encrypted off-site cloud storage.
SentrySafe Fire Protection
The fire safe uses SentrySafe Captured Fire Insulation (high-moisture concrete) and is Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Classified to protect valuable items in a fire for 1/2 hour up to 1550°F (843°C).
UL Standard 72 for Record Protection Equipment tests fire safes in a laboratory furnace to measure the internal temperature and humidity. Class 350, if it stays below 350°F, and maximum humidity 100%, is rated for storing paper records. Class 150, below 150°F, and humidity below 85%, is rated for photographic records and magnetic tape, and Class 125, below 125°F, and humidity below 80%, is rated for digital media storage.
✔ Tip: Different types of plastic have different melting points. To avoid melting in a fire, do not store plastic bags, credit cards or other plastic items in the storage chest. Use ceramic mugs, wood or metal storage containers or fireproof fiberglass pouches for organizers.
In Phoenix, Arizona, plastic mailboxes and credit cards melted when outdoor temperatures reached 120°F during a heat wave.
Note: Paper chars at 420°F and burns at 450°F. Wood chars at 250°F and burns at 390°F. The melting point of tin is 450°F, aluminum is 1220°F.
SentrySafe Water Protection
Electrical Testing Laboratory (ETL) Verified to protect valuable items from water and flood damage, up to 72 hours (3 days) of submersion.
Basic Security Protection
Privacy key lock with a tubular key provides basic security to keep unauthorized viewers, children, pets, insects, and rodents away from the contents of the storage chest.
Note: This model is primarily made for fire and water disaster protection and is not designed for maximum security against burglar break-in using tools.
✔ Tip: You can store it in a locked room or cabinet with a security camera and an alarm for more burglar protection. There are other models available with stronger lock protection including combination, fingerprint, and digital locks.
An optional bolt-down kit is available to prevent theft, but once installed, the chest is no longer waterproof.
You can order a replacement key if you have the model number, serial number, and lock number.
The SentrySafe CHW20221 also includes in-lid straps for organizing and quick access to small items like passports, extra keys or digital media files, such as backup files.
It has a built-in carrying handle for easy grab-and-go transportation of your valuables to a secure storage room or to leave quickly in an emergency evacuation, road trip, or when moving.
SentrySafe offers a limited one-year warranty against manufacturing defects and a lifetime after-fire replacement for fire-resistant safes.
Silica gel desiccant packs protect items from moisture long-term. Waterproof chests are airtight. Moisture from the air and condensation can get trapped inside when you close the lid. Mold or mildew may result. For best results, open the chest at least once or twice a month to air it out.
Keep a desiccant pack inside to absorb moisture while the chest safe is locked. Replace the desiccant pack every 6 months, or sooner if you are in a high humidity environment. You can also reactivate the desiccant packs by heating them in an oven. Some vendors sell desiccant packs with indicator beads that change color when they need to be dried.
✔ Tip: Other choices for absorbing moisture are 1/2 cup of dry rice in an open mug or jar or an open box of baking soda. Replace every 6 months.
Where to Store Your Home Safe
Home fires usually start in the kitchen, fireplace or garage. Install smoke alarms and keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Store your safe away from these common fire areas, flammable materials and moisture for the best chance of survival. The inside corner of two exterior walls will stay the coolest in the event of a fire.
Keep the safe low to the ground for lower fire temperatures and so it won’t fall thru a floor and break open if the building collapses during a fire. A concrete basement floor is a good location. Place it on bricks to raise it above any potential water on the floor. A piece of sheetrock can be placed on top for concealment and as insulation from falling burning debris. Don’t make the safe too hard to access or you won’t use it and you won’t be able to grab it quickly in an emergency.
In case of fire, tell the firefighters where the safe is located. They should avoid heavy water spray in that area, light spray only. After a fire, let the safe cool before attempting to open.
Read and follow the user instructions from the manufacturer.
✔ Tip: A small fireproof chest could be stored inside a locked metal desk drawer, metal cabinet or a broken, unplugged microwave oven.
