Multistate Commuting Notaries

Some notaries are commuting notaries who travel between adjacent states. Most states require a notary to be a state resident. But, in some states, you only need to work or do business there to become a notary. State residency is not required.

In other states, you do not need to be a resident or work in the state to become a notary, if you live in a bordering state. Some states allow non-resident attorneys to be notaries.

So, there is an opportunity for commuting notaries who live in one state but commute to another state, to be notaries in multiple states. Also, depending on the state definition of resident, a notary may be able to live in one state during part of the year, as a part-time resident, and live in another state the rest of the year, such as a snowbird, with a summer and winter home. Or, a person who works at job sites in multiple states, such as a construction worker, or a traveling salesperson, consultant or corporate employee.

Some states extend reciprocal powers to notaries in adjacent states.

Colorado Notaries

A Colorado notary must live or work in Colorado, but could also be eligible to become a Kansas notary, Oklahoma notary, and a Wisconsin notary.

A Wyoming resident could commute to work in Colorado and qualify to be a Colorado Notary.

Wyoming law allows a Colorado notary to notarize in Wyoming, but only if Colorado law reciprocates by allowing a Wyoming notary to notarize in Colorado. But, Colorado does not reciprocate notary powers with Wyoming.
