Notaries in Ancient Egypt, 2750 BC<\/h1>\n

The first notaries were the notaries in Ancient Egypt<\/strong>.\u00a0 By recording official transactions, they played a key role in the development of government, commerce and organized society.<\/p>\n

\"Egyptian<\/a>Dating back to 2750 BC, scribes<\/strong> (sesh) and notaries in Ancient Egypt, recorded important public and legal events.\u00a0 The ancient Egyptian kabbaneh<\/strong> was a public weigher and notary.<\/p>\n

Scribes were a part of the ancient Egyptian bureaucracy, recording personal letters<\/strong>, official proclamations<\/strong>, tax records<\/strong>, written communications<\/strong>, and other documents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Scribes were considered part of the royal court and did not have to engage in manual labor, pay tax or join the military.<\/p>\n

The closing phrase used in ancient letters, \u201cMay you be well when you hear this<\/em>,\u201d implies that scribes also read communications aloud to people.\u00a0 Many people were illiterate<\/strong>, so the notaries in Ancient Egypt were highly valuable in documenting history.<\/p>\n

Papyrus<\/strong> was one media used for record-keeping, but does not have a long life, except under ideal conditions.\u00a0 Reed brushes and pens, dipped in ink, were used for writing.<\/p>\n

The successful Egyptian society had laws, but archaeologists have not found any national law code<\/strong>, similar to the Code of Hammurabi<\/strong> of Babylon.\u00a0 Decrees were made by the pharaoh<\/strong> (king), who was considered a god<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Egyptian courts<\/strong> were judicial and also served as notary agencies<\/strong>.\u00a0 Important documents could be formally recorded by court scribes<\/strong> on behalf of illiterate people.<\/p>\n

\"King<\/a>Notaries in Ancient Egypt sealed official documents with a cartouche<\/strong>, and were held in high status.\u00a0\u00a0 Since they read all documents, they were well aware of important transactions and communications in their region.<\/p>\n

Greek Notaries in Ancient Egypt<\/h2>\n

In 333 BC, Alexander the Great<\/strong> invaded Egypt, bringing a Greek government<\/strong> into power for a thousand years, until the Arab invasion<\/strong> in 640 AD.\u00a0 The Macedonian dynasty<\/strong> of the Ptolemies<\/strong>, ruled from the Greek city of Alexandria<\/strong>, until 30 BC, when the Romans<\/strong> gained control.<\/p>\n

The English name Egypt<\/strong> is derived from the ancient Greek word for the country, A\u00edgyptos<\/strong>.\u00a0 Pharaoh<\/strong> comes from the Greek word phara\u00f4<\/strong>, from the ancient Egyptian word\u00a0 for Great House or palace<\/strong> of the king.<\/p>\n

Some Egyptian scribes took Greek names<\/strong> and learned to write Greek.\u00a0 There were Greek notaries and Egyptian notaries during the Ptolemy<\/strong> reign.\u00a0 The Rosetta Stone<\/strong>, issued in 196 BC, contains a decree by Ptolemy V, written in Egyptian hieroglyphs<\/strong>, demotic script and Greek.<\/p>\n

Temples<\/strong> were not only religious<\/strong> institutions, but also performed economic<\/strong> and administrative<\/strong> functions.\u00a0 There was no separation of church and state.\u00a0 Temples were part of the state organization.<\/p>\n

Dates found in notarial contracts and tax receipts help to reconstruct events.\u00a0 Law and governance served to provide legitimacy and to extract taxes.\u00a0 The Ptolemy reign codified<\/strong> and clarified Pharaonic law<\/strong>, which applied to native Egyptians.\u00a0 Greeks fell under a form of Greek law<\/strong>, and cities, strongholds of the immigrant nobility and royalty, fell under royal law<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Early Ptolemaic contracts required sixteen<\/strong> witnesses<\/strong>, and often required that witnesses transcribe a copy<\/strong> of the contract.\u00a0 More witnesses and more copies made it easier to tax transactions.\u00a0 Earlier Egyptian contracts required four to eight witnesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The people grew tired of these excessive witness measures.\u00a0 In 200 BC, the witness copy procedure was abandoned, due to the rise of state notaries<\/strong>.\u00a0 Contracts were required to be notarized, aiding the taxation on the transaction.<\/p>\n

Recording of contracts had a long history, back to Pharaonic times.\u00a0 Copies of important documents were deposited<\/strong> into state archives<\/strong>.\u00a0 On certain Greek contracts and other documents, red stamps<\/strong> were used to acknowledge receipt<\/strong> for recording.<\/p>\n

Notaries, agoranomoi<\/strong> in Greek, are evidenced by documents issued from the nomarchy<\/strong> (regional government) of Pathyris and its capital, Krokodilopolis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Notaries in Ancient Egypt evolved as Egypt was invaded by Persians<\/strong>, Greeks<\/strong>, Romans<\/strong> and Arabs<\/strong>.\u00a0 Their records are useful in preserving history.<\/p>\n
