Licensed under CC BY-SA 1.0 via Wikimedia Commons<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Greek Notaries in Ancient Egypt<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 333 BC, <strong>Alexander the Great<\/strong> invaded Egypt, bringing a <strong>Greek government<\/strong> into power for a thousand years, until the <strong>Arab invasion<\/strong> in 640 AD.\u00a0 The <strong>Macedonian dynasty<\/strong> of the <strong>Ptolemies<\/strong>, ruled from the Greek city of <strong>Alexandria<\/strong>, until 30 BC, when the <strong>Romans<\/strong> gained control.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The English name <strong>Egypt<\/strong> is derived from the ancient Greek word for the country, <strong>A\u00edgyptos<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Pharaoh<\/strong> comes from the Greek word <strong>phara\u00f4<\/strong>, from the ancient Egyptian word\u00a0 for Great House or <strong>palace<\/strong> of the king.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some Egyptian scribes took <strong>Greek names<\/strong> and learned to write Greek.\u00a0 There were Greek notaries and Egyptian notaries during the <strong>Ptolemy<\/strong> reign.\u00a0 The <strong>Rosetta Stone<\/strong>, issued in 196 BC, contains a decree by Ptolemy V, written in Egyptian <strong>hieroglyphs<\/strong>, demotic script and Greek.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Temples<\/strong> were not only <strong>religious<\/strong> institutions, but also performed <strong>economic<\/strong> and <strong>administrative<\/strong> functions.\u00a0 There was no separation of church and state.\u00a0 Temples were part of the state organization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dates found in notarial contracts and tax receipts help to reconstruct events.\u00a0 Law and governance served to provide legitimacy and to extract taxes.\u00a0 The Ptolemy reign <strong>codified<\/strong> and clarified <strong>Pharaonic law<\/strong>, which applied to native Egyptians.\u00a0 Greeks fell under a form of <strong>Greek law<\/strong>, and cities, strongholds of the immigrant nobility and royalty, fell under <strong>royal law<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Early Ptolemaic contracts required <strong>sixteen<\/strong> <strong>witnesses<\/strong>, and often required that witnesses transcribe a <strong>copy<\/strong> of the contract.\u00a0 More witnesses and more copies made it easier to tax transactions.\u00a0 Earlier Egyptian contracts required four to eight <strong>witnesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The people grew tired of these excessive witness measures.\u00a0 In 200 BC, the witness copy procedure was abandoned, due to the rise of <strong>state notaries<\/strong>.\u00a0 Contracts were required to be notarized, aiding the taxation on the transaction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recording of contracts had a long history, back to Pharaonic times.\u00a0 Copies of important documents were <strong>deposited<\/strong> into <strong>state archives<\/strong>.\u00a0 On certain Greek contracts and other documents, <strong>red stamps<\/strong> were used to <strong>acknowledge receipt<\/strong> for recording.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notaries, <strong>agoranomoi<\/strong> in Greek, are evidenced by documents issued from the <strong>nomarchy<\/strong> (regional government) of Pathyris and its capital, <strong>Krokodilopolis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notaries in Ancient Egypt evolved as Egypt was invaded by <strong>Persians<\/strong>, <strong>Greeks<\/strong>, <strong>Romans<\/strong> and <strong>Arabs<\/strong>.\u00a0 Their records are useful in preserving history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Visit our website for <a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Colorado Springs Mobile Notary<\/strong><\/a> services or <a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/Colorado_Notary_Training.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Colorado Notary Training<\/strong><\/a> classes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a9 Copyright 2015\u00a0 ABC Legal Docs, LLC\u00a0 All rights reserved.\u00a0 Do not copy.\u00a0 Citations welcome.\u00a0 Terms of Use apply.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Notaries in Ancient Egypt, 2750 BC The first notaries were the notaries in Ancient Egypt.\u00a0 By recording official transactions, they played a key role in the development of government, commerce and organized society.
