The date of November 7th was chosen as Notary Public Day<\/strong> in recognition of the day that America\u2019s first notary, Thomas Fugill<\/strong>, was appointed, by the coastal Colony of New Haven (now the capital of Connecticut) in 1639<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Pilgrims (see Mayflower image) landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620 to\u00a0form Plymouth Colony<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Most of the New England notary records from that time have been lost or destroyed, but the notary journal from 1644 of William Aspinwall<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0of Boston has survived.<\/p>\n

In Colonial America, notaries lived in coastal seaports because they were needed for Trans-Atlantic shipping<\/strong> commerce.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Christopher Columbus<\/span><\/h2>\n

The first notary in North America landed with Christopher Columbus<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in 1492<\/strong>. Rodrigo de Escobedo<\/strong> sailed on the flagship Santa Maria and was secretary of the fleet.\u00a0 The painting “Landing of Columbus<\/strong>” hangs in the rotunda at the U.S. Capitol and shows the notary standing behind the right shoulder of Columbus.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Notary History began with Writing Systems<\/span><\/h2>\n

Notaries have been around for 5,000 years since the invention of writing systems and record-keeping in ancient Sumer<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, China<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, India<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, Egypt<\/strong><\/a><\/span>,\u00a0Rome<\/a><\/span>,<\/strong>\u00a0Greece<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, Phoenicia<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, and the Maya<\/a><\/strong><\/span> civilization.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Notary Role<\/span><\/h2>\n

They serve the public by recording transactions of legal, judicial, and commercial importance, as well as private documents in an official notary journal.<\/p>\n

As neutral third-party officials, notaries help to deter fraud<\/strong> and promote confidence and trust<\/strong> in the authenticity of document transactions.\u00a0 There are nearly 4.8 million notaries in the United States.<\/p>\n

Some notaries offer a discount or free notary services on November 7th, Notary Public Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
