Delaware requires education for electronic notaries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">State-approved training courses must include all training <strong>elements<\/strong> required by the state regulator, usually the Secretary of State (SOS).\u00a0 Course content must be updated when there are changes in notary laws, rules, and regulations.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Eight states require notary applicants to pass a <strong>notary exam<\/strong>, but no training course:\u00a0 Connecticut, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, New York and Utah.\u00a0 Wyoming has an optional exam that is encouraged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Five states require both completing a <strong>notary training<\/strong> course and passing a <strong>notary exam<\/strong>: California, <strong>Colorado<\/strong>, Nevada, North Carolina and Oregon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>Update<\/strong><\/span>: recent proposed or passed education, training or exam requirements<br \/>\n<strong>New Jersey<\/strong>\u00a0proposed new legislation in 2016, SB 333, requires training and exam for new notaries.<br \/>\n<strong>Idaho<\/strong> passed new legislation in 2017, HB 209, requires training for new notaries.<br \/>\n<strong>Indiana<\/strong> passed new legislation in 2017 requires training and exam for new notaries, continuing education for all notaries every 2 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">require notary education course for some or all new notaries:<br \/>\n<strong>Georgia<\/strong> (HB 120)<br \/>\n<strong>Kansas<\/strong> (SB 143)<br \/>\n<strong>Kentucky<\/strong> (HB 218)<br \/>\n<strong>Michigan<\/strong> (HB 4374)<br \/>\n<strong>Minnesota<\/strong> (HF 1609 and SF 893)<br \/>\n<strong>Rhode Island<\/strong> (HB 6110)<br \/>\n<strong>Texas<\/strong> (SB 665)<br \/>\n<strong>Vermont<\/strong> (HB 526)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In <strong>Ohio<\/strong>, state law does not require training or an exam.\u00a0 However, most counties require <strong>notary training<\/strong> and\/or a <strong>notary exam<\/strong>.\u00a0 Contact the county for more information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>California<\/strong> and <strong>Missouri<\/strong> also require <strong>continuing education<\/strong> for notaries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whether your state requires training or an exam or not, all notaries have a duty to know and follow state laws, and to use <strong>reasonable care<\/strong>, to avoid <strong>negligence<\/strong> claims.\u00a0 It is smart to complete a training course, and exam, whether it is required or not, to make sure you understand the laws and to reduce your risk of <strong>mistakes<\/strong>, <strong>errors<\/strong>, and <strong>omissions<\/strong>.\u00a0 Notaries are <strong>liable<\/strong> for their mistakes and should buy notary errors and omissions (<strong>E&amp;O<\/strong>) <strong>insurance<\/strong> for protection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Employers<\/strong> should require <strong>employee<\/strong> notaries to complete a training course and an exam, to ensure that the person is knowledgeable and current, to reduce <strong>liability<\/strong> risk for the employer.\u00a0 Periodic refresher training and re-testing is smart business.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Basic_and_Advanced_Notary_Training\"><\/span>Basic and Advanced Notary Training<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most courses only provide <strong>basic notary training<\/strong> or notary <strong>exam preparation<\/strong>.\u00a0 For example, <strong>Colorado<\/strong> has about 40 laws involving notary procedures, but only 14 elements must be included in state-approved Colorado basic notary training.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notaries should also complete <strong>advanced training<\/strong> to gain more knowledge and learn how to perform less well-known and more complicated procedures or decline to perform advanced procedures if not knowledgeable.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notary_Signing_Agents\"><\/span>Notary Signing Agents<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some notaries work as <strong>notary signing agents<\/strong> (<strong>NSA<\/strong>) for title companies, signing services, mortgage lenders, auto lenders, and other companies to gather customer signatures on a bundle of documents, and notarize, where needed.\u00a0 Additional training is required to gain knowledge to serve as a notary signing agent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Signing agents should perform <strong>due diligence<\/strong> before choosing an education vendor for training and\/or <strong>certification<\/strong>.\u00a0 Some states impose requirements or restrictions on signing agents, so check your state laws.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notary_Training_Methods_and_Support\"><\/span>Notary Training Methods and Support<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Training methods may include classroom training, webinar, teleconference, online slides or video or textbook.\u00a0 Choose the method that works best for you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Be sure the notary training <strong>instructor<\/strong> provides <strong>support<\/strong> for students after you complete your training, so you can ask questions.\u00a0 This is very important for new notaries while learning.\u00a0 Look for an instructor who has <strong>notary experience<\/strong> in your state.\u00a0 Some instructors are only in the training business, or may be from out of state, and are not active notaries in your state.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Look for a notary training instructor that publishes a <strong>notary blog,<\/strong> which is a useful source of notary news, notary history, articles of interest, business tips, tech tips, security tips, and other
