Alaska Postmaster, Alaska Notary<\/h1>\n

An Alaska postmaster<\/strong> is authorized to serve as an Alaska notary<\/strong>.\u00a0 The authority is given under federal regulations, 39 CFR 222.2<\/strong> – Authority to administer oaths or function as notaries public<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"ABC<\/a>39 CFR 222.2 (c) Authority to function as notaries public<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

(1)\u00a0 Postmasters<\/strong> in Alaska<\/strong> have the authority to administer oaths<\/strong> and affirmations<\/strong>, take acknowledgments<\/strong> and make and execute certificates<\/strong> thereof, and perform all other functions of a notary public<\/strong> within Alaska<\/strong> when a certification is necessary to meet any Act of Congress or the Legislature of Alaska.\u00a0 No fees<\/strong> may be charged for notarial services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

(2)\u00a0 An officer or employee who is a notary public<\/strong> shall not charge or receive compensation for notarial services for another officer or employee regarding Government business; nor for notarial services for any person during the hours of the notary’s services to the Government, including the lunch period.<\/p>\n

Alaska Notary Law<\/h2>\n

Alaska Statute AS 44.50.180,<\/strong> Postmasters as Notaries<\/strong>, also authorizes Alaska postmasters as Alaska notaries.<\/p>\n

(a)\u00a0 Each postmaster<\/strong> in the state may perform the functions of a notary public<\/strong> in the state.<\/p>\n

(b)\u00a0 Each official act of a postmaster<\/strong> as a notary public<\/strong> shall be signed by the postmaster, with a designation of the person’s title as postmaster<\/strong>, shall have the cancellation<\/strong> stamp<\/strong> of the post office affixed, and shall state the name of the post office<\/strong> and the date<\/strong> on which the act was done.<\/p>\n

(c)\u00a0 [Repealed, Sec. 14 ch 60 SLA 2005].<\/p>\n

(d)\u00a0 Nothing in this chapter requires a postmaster<\/strong> to post a bond<\/strong> or to have a commission<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Since Alaska is large and sparsely populated, and remote towns may have a post office<\/strong>, but not an Alaska notary<\/strong>, authorizing Alaska postmasters with notary powers<\/strong> helps to serve the public.<\/p>\n
