Garfield<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Emma_Gillett_Teacher\"><\/span>Emma Gillett, Teacher<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She was a <strong>lawyer<\/strong> and <strong>women&#8217;s rights activist<\/strong> who played an important role in advancing legal studies for women. She was born Emma Millinda Gillett in 1852 to homesteaders in Princeton, Wisconsin. Her father was a lawyer and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/colorado-justice-of-the-peace-1859-1962\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>justice of the peace<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. Following his death in 1854, she moved with her mother and sister to live with family in Girard, Pennsylvania, where she was educated. In 1870, she graduated from the all-female Lake Erie Seminary in Ohio and served as a <strong>teacher<\/strong> in Pennsylvania public schools for ten years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She was disappointed in the low wages paid to single women teachers. Following the death of her mother in 1875, she moved to <strong>Washington, D.C.<\/strong> to pursue a legal career. She apprenticed under <strong>Supreme Court<\/strong> attorney and women&#8217;s advocate <strong>Belva Lockwood<\/strong>. Lockwood had gained national attention in the 1870s in her struggle to join the <strong>Supreme Court Bar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Emma_Gillett_Lawyer\"><\/span>Emma Gillett, Lawyer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Emma Gillett graduated from <strong>Howard University Law School<\/strong> in 1883, and passed the bar the same year. She joined the Supreme Court Bar in 1890.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She became a <strong>chancery examiner<\/strong> and joined a D.C. <strong>law firm<\/strong> headed by <strong>Watson J. Newton<\/strong>, whom she met while working as a <strong>notary public<\/strong>. She stayed for the rest of her career, practicing real estate, pension and probate law, making partner in 1900, with the law firm renamed Newton and Gillett.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Emma_Gillett_Legal_Educator\"><\/span>Emma Gillett, Legal Educator<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1896, with her colleague <strong>Ellen Spencer Mussey<\/strong>, the two opened the <strong>Women&#8217;s Law Class<\/strong> at Mussey&#8217;s law office. Mussey taught <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/u-s-constitution-bill-of-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Constitutional Law<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, Contracts and Personal Property, while Gillett taught <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/english-common-law-notaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Blackstone<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, Bills and Notes and Domestic Relations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The legal education program grew and was incorporated in 1898 as the co-educational <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcl.american.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington College of Law<\/a><\/span> (WCL)<\/strong>, the first <strong>law school<\/strong> founded by women, now merged with <strong>American University<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She served as President of the <strong>Women&#8217;s Bar Association<\/strong> in 1921, and at her death in 1927 was <strong>Dean Emeritus<\/strong> of the Washington College of Law and Chairman of the Legal Branch of the <strong>National Woman&#8217;s Party<\/strong>.
