The word <strong>notary<\/strong> comes from the Latin words <strong>Notae Tironinae<\/strong> or <strong>nota<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other literate people who wrote, recorded and witnessed documents for a fee, adopted the <strong>nota<\/strong> method, and the term <strong>notarius<\/strong> was used to describe them.\u00a0 Literacy was not widespread among the general population.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Notaries<\/strong> became semi-officials during the early days of the <strong>Roman Empire<\/strong>.\u00a0 They were also officers of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/notaries-and-the-church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catholic Church<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, and <strong>Popes<\/strong> appointed <strong>papal notaries<\/strong>.\u00a0 The Roman Empire reached its peak during the second century.\u00a0 As the empire grew and literacy increased, the use of <strong>notaries<\/strong> spread throughout the empire.\u00a0 With the decline of the <strong>Roman Empire<\/strong>, the <strong>Pope<\/strong> and the <strong>Church<\/strong> took over many functions neglected by the Roman government.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notarios<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/notary-with-christopher-columbus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Columbus<\/a><\/strong><\/span> arrived in 1492, <strong>Spanish<\/strong> and <strong>French<\/strong> explorers came to the <strong>New World<\/strong> and brought their laws with them, which are based on <strong>Roman Law<\/strong>.\u00a0 Notaries in Spanish-speaking countries in <strong>Latin America<\/strong> are known as <strong>notarios<\/strong> and have more legal training and authority than notaries public in the United States.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>British<\/strong> <strong>colonists<\/strong> and <strong>Pilgrims<\/strong> brought <strong>English law<\/strong>, which developed separately from <strong>Roman Law<\/strong>.\u00a0 In the United States today, 49 states have laws based on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/english-common-law-notaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">English common law<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.
