When signing a document, they made their mark or X and often added their private seal after their mark.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sealed_Instruments\"><\/span>Sealed Instruments<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under <strong>contract law<\/strong>, and the <strong>Law of Sealed Instruments<\/strong>, a sealed document has additional <strong>rights<\/strong>, such as a longer statute of limitations for enforcement, and does not require consideration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A contract under seal was a <strong>formal contract<\/strong> under <strong>Common Law<\/strong>.\u00a0 Many states have passed laws, including the <strong>Uniform Commercial Code<\/strong> (UCC), that abolish, limit or nullify the use or effect of a <strong>private seal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The phrase &#8220;<strong>signed, sealed and delivered&#8221;<\/strong> refers to a sealed instrument, such as a <strong>deed<\/strong>.\u00a0 It was signed, then a private seal was applied, then the document was delivered to the recipient.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under the old law, a <strong>Power of Attorney<\/strong> required a <strong>seal<\/strong> on the document, while a <strong>Letter of Attorney<\/strong> only required a <strong>signature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some important documents were <strong>sealed<\/strong> by stringing <strong>ribbon<\/strong> through several pages and then <strong>sealing<\/strong> the ribbon with a <strong>wax seal<\/strong> to prevent pages from being added or removed.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Personal_and_Private_Seals\"><\/span>Personal and Private Seals<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Personal seals were used in <strong>Colonial America<\/strong>, and by the founding fathers.\u00a0\u00a0They often included a favorite motto. The <strong>personal seal<\/strong> of <strong>Thomas Jefferson<\/strong>, author of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/declaration-of-independence-1776\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Declaration of Independence<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, contained his initials &#8220;T J&#8221;, encircled by the motto, &#8220;<strong>Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God<\/strong>&#8220;.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The motto was suggested by <strong>Benjamin Franklin<\/strong> for the <strong>Great Seal<\/strong> of the United States but was not used.<\/p>\n<p>In Colonial times and the Old West, government officials often used a personal seal, rather than a government seal, on official documents.<\/p>\n<p>In modern documents, the word seal in brackets [Seal] takes the place of an actual seal. A seal could be a handmade scrawl, flourish, mark or rubric. Red ink was common as the word <strong>rubric<\/strong> comes from Latin rubrica, meaning red.<\/p>\n<p>In Asian cultures, the use of a private seal is still common.
