href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/volumerelatingto00aspi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aspinwall Notarial Records<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, published in Boston in 1903, include entries for the years 1644-1651, and are some of the oldest surviving records of<a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/ABC_logo_120x80.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft wp-image-249 size-full\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" notaries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The records provide a fascinating glimpse into <strong>notarial acts<\/strong> during the Colonial period and into the daily life of the English colonists, trading, <strong>maritime shipping<\/strong>, and legal transactions.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Entries in the <strong>Aspinwall Notarial Records<\/strong> include transactions involving shipments of tobacco, corn, Indian corn, wheat, rye, barley, peas, sugar, Indigo, horses, cattle, hogs, fish, strong water (alcohol), beer, cotton, wool, linen, shoes, deer skins, moose skins, beaver skins, otter skins,\u00a0gun powder, shot, clapboard, pipestaves, and more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Documents listed include letters of attorney, wills, <strong>notary protests<\/strong>, <strong>affidavits<\/strong>, <strong>deeds<\/strong>, bills of sale, bills of health for vessels, copies, court judgments, and <strong>indentures<\/strong> of servants.\u00a0 Documents were signed and sealed by parties using a <strong>personal seal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Olde English<\/strong> spelling is used, with such words as booke, shipp, dayes, houres, seale, as well as abbreviations.\u00a0 Some entries are in <strong>Latin<\/strong>.\u00a0 In some places, <strong>Aspinwall<\/strong> wrote his title as <strong>Notarius Publicus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Amounts paid or due are listed in <strong>British currency<\/strong>: pounds, shillings and pence, but many transactions were also settled by paying in the form of <strong>barter<\/strong> with goods, fish, corn, cattle, or beaver.\u00a0 Trades with the <strong>Dutch<\/strong> in <strong>New Netherlands<\/strong> and <strong>New Amsterdam<\/strong> (now New York) were in Dutch guilders and stivers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Units of measure mentioned include barrels, Kintalls (<strong>quintals<\/strong>) (British hundredweight) of fish, and <strong>firkins<\/strong> (quarter barrels) of Sope (soap).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notary_Duties\"><\/span>Notary Duties<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among his duties as a <strong>Notary Public<\/strong> and <strong>Tabellion<\/strong>, Aspinwall visited homes to serve <strong>protests<\/strong> for the collection of <strong>debts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For Colonial <strong>maritime<\/strong> historians, names of many ships and captains are included, with frequent mentions of London, West Indies, Caribbean, and Barbados.\u00a0 For <strong>genealogists<\/strong>, many names, occupations, and relationships are listed, allowing researchers to find family <strong>ancestors<\/strong>.\u00a0 One entry mentions several <strong>Mayflower<\/strong> passengers, <strong>Captain Miles Standish<\/strong>, military commander of the <strong>Plymouth Colony<\/strong>, and <strong>William Bradford<\/strong> and <strong>Edward Winslow<\/strong>, Governors of <strong>Plymouth Colony<\/strong>.\u00a0 Some entries mention local <strong>Indians<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since the laws of most states, except Louisiana, are based on <strong>English common law<\/strong>, the <strong>Aspinwall Notarial Records<\/strong> provide a resource for legal research and <strong>notary history<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notary_with_Christopher_Columbus\"><\/span>Notary with Christopher Columbus<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first notary in North America, <strong>Rodrigo Escobedo<\/strong>, accompanied <strong>Christopher Columbus<\/strong> in 1492.\u00a0 Long before Columbus, <strong>Leif Erikson<\/strong>
