It was located in ancient <strong>Mesopotamia<\/strong>, between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, now southern <strong>Iraq<\/strong>, in the marsh flood plain of the delta region near the <strong>Persian Gulf<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Former hunter-gatherers of nomadic tribes became farmers and herders in the land of abundant fish, game and fertile soil. Thousands of years of spring floods, fed by snowmelt from the distant Taurus Mountains, created silt deposits. The region is known as the <strong>Fertile\u00a0Crescent<\/strong> and the <strong>Cradle of Civilization<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Horses and camels were still unknown, but sheep, goats, oxen, donkeys, and dogs were domesticated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Sumerians adopted an agricultural lifestyle as early as 5000 BC &#8211; 4500 BC. Written records appeared around 3300 BC as city-states grew.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sumerian_Inventions\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/map-Sumer-Mesopotamia-Fertile-Crescent.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4613\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/map-Sumer-Mesopotamia-Fertile-Crescent.jpg\" alt=\"map Sumer Mesopotamia Fertile Crescent\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Sumerian Inventions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Sumerians are credited with many <strong>inventions<\/strong> including the <strong>wheel<\/strong>, sailboat, beer, irrigation canal, ox-drawn plow, sun-dried brick, high-rise building, <strong>writing<\/strong>, <strong>government<\/strong>, arithmetic, algebra, geometry, art, and astronomy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The concept of government arose from the need to\u00a0organize the labor force to build and maintain the irrigation system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reliable irrigation increased crop yields and required fewer farmers, so more labor was available for other pursuits such as studying astronomy, mathematics, medicine, metallurgy, architecture, arts, and crafts. A writing system was needed to record the knowledge and data collected, events and transactions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They developed the first known codified legal and administrative systems, including government officials, courts, jails, and records.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A sexagesimal mathematical system was developed, based on multiples of 6 and 10. The number\u00a060 was associated with the highest-ranking deity <strong>An<\/strong>, the god of the sky. \u00a0The Sumerians first started selling items by the <strong>dozen<\/strong>, 12 being one-fifth of 60. They invented a <strong>calendar<\/strong> based on 12 lunar months and a day with 24 hours. They first divided an hour into 60 <strong>minutes<\/strong>, a minute into 60 <strong>seconds<\/strong>, and a circle into 360 <strong>degrees<\/strong>, 60&#215;6.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sumer started the <strong>Bronze Age<\/strong> by smelting tin and copper together to make <strong>bronze<\/strong>, used for tools, military weapons, blades, spears, and helmets. First to use the potter&#8217;s wheel, they later invented the wheeled cart and <strong>chariot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"City-States_of_Sumer\"><\/span>City-States of Sumer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The region of Sumeria consisted of city-states formed around 3500 to 3000 BC. Primary cities were <strong>Ur<\/strong>, the birthplace of <strong>Abraham<\/strong>, <strong>Uruk<\/strong>, the city of legendary <strong>King Gilgamesh<\/strong>, Lagash, and Eridu. North of Sumeria was the region of <strong>Akkad<\/strong>, including the ancient sites of <strong>Bablyon<\/strong>, Kish and Nippur, and the area of modern <strong>Baghdad<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Uruk<\/strong> became the most urbanized city in the world, with a population of 80,000.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">City-states were governed by a high priest-governor (ensi) or by a secular king (lugal), assisted by a council of male and female elders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sumer declined when the climate went into a long dry cycle. After centuries of irrigation, the soil became salty and crops would not grow. As the <strong>Iron Age<\/strong> began, other areas became more important.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Scribes_and_Notaries_of_Sumer\"><\/span>Scribes and Notaries of Sumer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bill-of-sale-Sumeria-Louvre.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4567\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bill-of-sale-Sumeria-Louvre.jpg\" alt=\"Bill of sale Sumeria, Louvre\" width=\"200\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a>The earliest texts date back to 3300 BC, with early <strong>cuneiform<\/strong> (wedge-shaped)\u00a0writing in 3000 BC. <strong>Scribes<\/strong> in Sumer wrote with a wedge-shaped reed stylus on wet clay tablets to create written records.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/dubsar-scribe-Cuneiform-symbol.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4605\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/dubsar-scribe-Cuneiform-symbol.jpg\" alt=\"dubsar scribe Sumeria Cuneiform symbol\" width=\"150\" height=\"50\" \/><\/a>The words dub (tablet) and sar (to write) are combined to form <strong>dub-sar<\/strong> (tablet writer or scribe).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The stylus was pressed at various angles to make picture symbols known as cuneiform that could be understood in foreign lands without requiring knowledge of phonetic pronunciation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Later an <strong>alphabet<\/strong> of characters of\u00a0the Aramaic language written in a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/notaries-ancient-phoenicia-1500-bc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Phoenician<\/strong><\/a><\/span> script replaced cuneiform as the predominant form of writing in the Middle East. Thousands of clay tablets have survived allowing scholars to study life in ancient Sumer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Scribes were well-respected temple officials and stationed around the public marketplace and at city gates to do writing, translating, and adding <strong>notary public<\/strong> seals to transactions.\u00a0The Sumerians used <strong>cylinder seals<\/strong>\u00a0with text and images engraved in stone. The seal was rolled onto wet clay to create scenes of transactions and events. \u00a0Seals were originally used to stamp legal documents, much like a notary seal is used today. <strong>Notaries<\/strong> were appointed by royal decree.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Parties signed items with personal seals made of stone, metal, or wood or used thumbprints. The king had a sealing ring. Multiple witnesses were used. Some clay tablets were encased in sealed clay envelopes for security.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Oaths<\/strong>\u00a0were sworn before local gods (nam-erim-am) and before the king (mu lugal-bi ni-pad, in the name of the king he swore).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Banking, insurance, real estate and merchant transactions are recorded in the records of ancient Sumer and Phoenicia. Business organizations were formed to pool capital and share risk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Initially, there was no coined money. Standard weights of <strong>silver<\/strong> served as measures of value and as a means of exchange, or food or trade goods were used for barter. Around 2500 BC, the <strong>shekel<\/strong> (she-kel, wheat-bushel) was a 1\/3-ounce silver coin valued at one bushel of wheat or one month of labor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first law book was considered a creation of <strong>Enki<\/strong>, the god of wisdom. The Sumerian <strong>legal code<\/strong> highly respected property rights and contracts and was administered by priests.\u00a0Elements of the Babylonian <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/code-of-hammurabi-babylon-1754-bc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Code of Hammurabi<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, 1754 BC, can be traced to Sumerian <strong>Code of Ur-Nammu<\/strong>, written in 2100 BC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Writing was also used for literature, in the form of poetic epics and stories, including <strong><em>The Epic of Gilgamesh<\/em><\/strong>, as well as prayers, letters, records, and laws. Many texts survive in multiple copies because they were transcribed by scribes in training.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the spread of writing, the first formal <strong>schools<\/strong> were established at the temples. Scribes, mostly young men, spent many years in school learning 1500 cuneiform symbols and practicing writing. They studied arithmetic since they also did accounting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Only 1% of the population was literate.\u00a0<strong>Nisaba<\/strong>, scribe of the gods, became the goddess of literacy, writing, and accounting. In the seventh year after the Great Calamity, he was summoned and carried aloft by two divine emissaries to Enki&#8217;s abode on an island in the River Magan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There he wrote the true account of the beginnings and the past and the Great Calamity as dictated by the deep voice of Enki. He wrote for 40 days and 40 nights, in two columns on smooth two-sided blue tablets of <strong>lapis lazuli<\/strong>\u00a0(gemstone) with a holy stylus made of <strong>electrum<\/strong>\u00a0(alloy of gold and silver) and a tip of divine <strong>crystal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then he wrote his own <strong>attestation<\/strong> on another tablet and marked it with his <strong>seal<\/strong> as a witness and stored and locked the tablets in the <strong>divine chest<\/strong> made of acacia wood inlaid with gold on the outside. And Endubsar was blessed and sent forth to admonish the people to be righteous, for in that lies a good and long life. Then came the smaller houses of lesser merchants and craftsmen. Colonies were established and spread their culture to other regions.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Akkadia_and_Babylonia\"><\/span>Akkadia and Babylonia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Classical Sumer ended with the rise of the <strong>Akkadian Empire<\/strong>\u00a0and conquest by <strong>King Sargon<\/strong> in 2340 BC. Around 1700 BC, Mesopotamia was united under Babylonian rule. Some cylinder seals and tablets show all the planets of the solar system, with their accurate orbits and sizes in relation to each other.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Five planets are viewable with the naked eye, but the most recently added planets were not discovered until 1781 for Uranus, 1846 for Neptune and 1930 for Pluto.
