<strong>privacy<\/strong>, many computer users are switching from using the <strong>Google<\/strong> <strong>search engine<\/strong> to a private search engine, such as <strong>StartPage<\/strong> or <strong>DuckDuckG<\/strong><strong>o<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Private search engines do not keep a log of your computer&#8217;s <strong>IP address<\/strong>, your <strong>search querie<\/strong><strong>s<\/strong>, the website you came from, and the websites you click on in the search results.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"StartPage_Search_Engine\"><\/span>StartPage Search Engine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With <strong>StartPage<\/strong>,<b> <\/b><strong>SSL<\/strong> (https) <strong>encryption<\/strong> is enabled and is made more secure by using <strong>Perfect Forward Secrecy<\/strong> (<strong>PFS<\/strong>) and <strong>Transport Layer Security<\/strong> (<strong>TLS<\/strong>).\u00a0 With PFS, each data transfer has its own <strong>encryption key<\/strong>.\u00a0 So, if a key is compromised, it cannot be used to decrypt other previously-stored encrypted data.\u00a0 This keeps your search information private.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once you complete<b> <\/b>a search, you get a list of search results.\u00a0 If you click on one of these results, the website will not know that you are the visitor, it will initially see <strong>StartPage<\/strong> as the visitor.\u00a0 But, if you then click a link on the website without using <strong>SSL<\/strong>, <strong>PFS<\/strong> or <strong>TLS<\/strong>, you will be visible to that website.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To maintain privacy, use the link in the search results that reads \u201c<strong>View by Proxy<\/strong>\u201d.\u00a0 <strong>StartPage<\/strong> will retrieve the website contents and display it for you.\u00a0 The website will only see the <strong>IP address<\/strong> for <strong>StartPage<\/strong>, not your computer&#8217;s IP address, and the website cannot see or store cookies on your web browser.\u00a0 The proxy service provides <strong>privacy<\/strong> and <strong>anonymity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can customize the <strong>StartPage<\/strong> settings and store them using an URL rather than using a cookie.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DuckDuckGo_Search_Engine\"><\/span>DuckDuckGo Search Engine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>DuckDuckGo<\/strong> is another popular choice for many users for a private search engine.\u00a0 But, <strong>Duck Duck Go<\/strong> does not include the proxy service offered by <strong>Start Page<\/strong>.\u00a0 So, your web searches are private, but your website visits are not private.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you use <strong>Google Chrome<\/strong>, <strong>Internet Explorer, Edge<\/strong> or <strong>Mozilla Firefox<\/strong> as your web browser, install the free <strong>add-ons<\/strong> for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.startpage.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>StartPage<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>DuckDuckGo<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 Then you can choose which search engine you want to use from the drop-down list in the search bar.
