allows you to create and store a strong unique password for each website that you visit.\u00a0 It will tell you if your password is weak or strong.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"LastPass_Security_Challenge\"><\/span>LastPass Security Challenge<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>LastPass<\/strong> <strong>Security Challenge<\/strong> will give you a report of the <strong>strength<\/strong> of each of your passwords, identify <strong>duplicates<\/strong> and give you a total <strong>score<\/strong>.\u00a0 You can make your passwords longer and stronger, eliminate duplicates and run the <strong>Security Challenge<\/strong> again to see how much your score improves.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It also includes a <strong>vulnerability check<\/strong> for the <strong>Heartbleed<\/strong> OpenSSL bug and will advise if you need to update your passwords on affected websites.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Password_Folders\"><\/span>Password Folders<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To keep organized, you can group your passwords into <strong>folders<\/strong> such as banking, credit cards, shopping, news, travel, entertainment, etc.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Browser_Compatibility\"><\/span>Browser Compatibility<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>LastPass<\/strong> is compatible with your favorite web <strong>browser<\/strong>: Chrome<strong>\u00ae<\/strong>, Brave<strong>\u00ae<\/strong>, Firefox<strong>\u00ae<\/strong>, Opera<strong>\u00ae<\/strong>, Edge<strong>\u00ae<\/strong> and Safari<strong>\u00ae<\/strong>.\u00a0 If you are using another password manager, you can <strong>import<\/strong> your stored passwords into LastPass.\u00a0 I was using <strong>KeePass<\/strong> and had no problem importing the passwords.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Master_Password\"><\/span>Master Password<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It uses <strong>Trust No One<\/strong> (<strong>TNO<\/strong>) security.\u00a0 This means that your passwords are transferred and stored in an <strong>encrypted<\/strong> format, and LastPass does not have the <strong>master password<\/strong> or encryption key.\u00a0 Only you keep the master password.\u00a0 Make it very strong and store it in a secure place, such as a <strong>fire-proof safe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Multi-factor_Authentication\"><\/span>Multi-factor Authentication<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For extra protection, use <strong>multi-factor authentication<\/strong>.\u00a0 You can require a <strong>master password<\/strong> and a code number generated by an <strong>authenticator app<\/strong> on your <strong>smartphone<\/strong> to gain access to your password vault.\u00a0 Do not use SMS text messaging for two-factor authentication.\u00a0 It is not secure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many users have <strong>weak passwords<\/strong> and use the same password on multiple websites.\u00a0 This is bad security practice.\u00a0\u00a0 According to the LastPass website, 73% of people use the <strong>same password<\/strong> for multiple sites, the average <strong>password length<\/strong> is only 6 characters, and it only takes 3 minutes to <strong>crack<\/strong> the average password.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_Strong_Passwords\"><\/span>Use Strong Passwords<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With <strong>LastPass<\/strong>, you can generate and store long, strong, unique passwords for each website to greatly improve your website security.\u00a0 Avoid using <strong>personal information<\/strong> such as your name, family members, pets, birthdates, phone numbers, location, zip code, and all words found in the dictionary.\u00a0 Use <strong>random strings<\/strong> containing upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You won&#8217;t have to remember the passwords, LastPass will store them for you.\u00a0 When you go to a website that requires login information, it will fill in your user name and password.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The basic version of <strong>LastPass<\/strong> is free.\u00a0 A premium version is available with more features.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>Security Update<\/strong><\/span>: 2023-02-03 Since this post was originally written in 2014, LastPass has suffered multiple <strong>security breaches<\/strong> and has lost much public trust.\u00a0 We no longer use or recommend LastPass.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, we switched from LastPass to the free version of <b>Bitwarden<strong>\u00ae<\/strong><\/b>\u00a0for an online password manager and also use free <strong>KeePassXC<\/strong> as an offline password manager for <strong>redundancy<\/strong>.
