Territory<\/strong> was formed in 1861, was a <strong>marriage<\/strong> in 1842 at <strong>Bent&#8217;s Fort<\/strong>, a frontier <strong>trading post<\/strong> on the <strong>Santa Fe Trail<\/strong>, along the <strong>Arkansas River<\/strong>, 70 miles east of <strong>Pueblo<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Bent&#8217;s Fort<\/strong> was established in 1832.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: <strong>Louisiana Purchase<\/strong>.\u00a0 After Louisiana became a state in 1812, the land was part of <strong>Missouri Territory<\/strong>, with <strong>St. Louis<\/strong> as the capital, until Missouri became a state in 1821.\u00a0 After 1821, the land was part of <strong>unorganized territory<\/strong>.\u00a0 This area was near the territory claimed by the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/notaries-in-the-republic-of-texas-1836-1846\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Republic of Texas<\/strong><\/a><\/span> from 1836 to 1846.\u00a0 It later became <strong>Kansas Territory<\/strong> in 1851, then <strong>Colorado Territory<\/strong> in 1861, and the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/colorado-day-statehood-august-1-1876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>State of Colorado<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in 1876.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Marriage_of_George_Simpson_and_Juana_Suaso\"><\/span>Marriage of George Simpson and Juana Suaso<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">George Simpson, age 24, and Juana Maria Suaso, age 14, were married on November 30, 1842, at <strong>Bent&#8217;s Fort<\/strong> by a <strong>notary<\/strong> from <strong>Missouri<\/strong>.\u00a0 George was the son of a wealthy St. Louis merchant and was one of the builders of <strong>Fort Pueblo<\/strong>.\u00a0 The couple signed a statement, agreeing to live as man and wife.\u00a0 The &#8220;marriage license&#8221; document was signed by witnesses and certified by the <strong>notary<\/strong>, using a stamped <strong>gold seal<\/strong> over a <strong>blue ribbon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Parchment<\/strong> and <strong>quill pens<\/strong> were used at that time.\u00a0 Today, visitors can buy parchment paper, a quill pen, ink, and old-style journals and many other items from the store at <strong>Bent&#8217;s Fort,<\/strong> or on their website.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under current law, a <strong>Colorado notary<\/strong> is not authorized to officiate a <strong>marriage<\/strong>.\u00a0 Notaries in <strong>Maine<\/strong>, <strong>South Carolina<\/strong>, <strong>Florida<\/strong>, and <strong>Nevada<\/strong> do have the authority to officiate a marriage.\u00a0 Many years ago, notaries in many locations had powers similar to a <strong>justice of the peace<\/strong>.\u00a0 In remote areas, a notary was often the only government official within several days horse ride.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bents_Old_Fort\"><\/span>Bent&#8217;s Old Fort<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Bent&#8217;s Old Fort National Historic Site<\/strong> is administered by the National Park Service and preserves the history of frontier life from the 1840s.
