If you are running <strong>Windows<\/strong> on your PC, follow this free <strong>tech tip<\/strong> to improve your computer <a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Admin_Account_Settings.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft wp-image-371 size-full\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Admin_Account_Settings.jpg\" alt=\"Administrator Account Settings\" width=\"250\" height=\"91\" \/><\/a>system <strong>security<\/strong>.\u00a0 Go to the <strong>Control Panel<\/strong> and check the access <strong>privileges<\/strong> you have set for your <strong>User Account<\/strong>.\u00a0 You should have at least two accounts set up, one for the system <strong>administrator<\/strong> and one for each computer <strong>user<\/strong>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Administrator_Account\"><\/span>Administrator Account<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you only have one account, for the system <strong>administrator<\/strong>, and you use the administrator account for daily use as a computer <strong>user<\/strong>, you are taking an unnecessary <strong>risk<\/strong>.\u00a0 If your computer becomes infected with a <strong>virus<\/strong>, <strong>malware<\/strong>, or a <strong>hacker<\/strong> or unauthorized person breaks into your computer, an <strong>intruder<\/strong> can gain complete access to your computer to install, modify or remove <strong>software<\/strong>, or to change <strong>settings<\/strong>, since the intruder will have system <strong>administrator privileges<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para lastElement\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">To protect your computer, set up your User Account to be a <strong>standard user account<\/strong>, not an <strong>administrator account<\/strong>.\u00a0 Note:\u00a0 Windows requires at least one administrator account on a computer.\u00a0 If you have only one account on your computer, you can&#8217;t change it to a standard account.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you only have one account now, go to <strong>Control Panel<\/strong>, User Accounts, Manage Accounts, Change an Account, to set up a second account with <strong>administrator privileges<\/strong>.\u00a0 Give the <strong>administrator account<\/strong> a new name and a <strong>strong password<\/strong>, including upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters.\u00a0 Be sure to memorize the <strong>administrator password<\/strong> and store it offline,\u00a0<strong>locked<\/strong> in a desk or <strong>fireproof safe<\/strong> in case you forget it.\u00a0 You can also set up an optional photo for the account.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once you have set up the <strong>administrator account<\/strong>, try it out.\u00a0 Go to the start menu and select &#8220;<strong>switch user<\/strong>&#8220;.\u00a0 Your computer screen should display your account choices.\u00a0 Select the <strong>administrator account<\/strong> and type in the administrator <strong>password<\/strong> to log in.\u00a0 Once the administrator account is working, you can &#8220;switch user&#8221; again and log back into your <strong>User Account<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"para lastElement\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Standard_User_Account\"><\/span>Standard User Account<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/User_Account_Settings.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-372\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/User_Account_Settings.jpg\" alt=\"Standard User Account Settings\" width=\"250\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a>Now that you have a separate administrator account set up and working, you can use the <strong>Control Panel<\/strong> again to <strong>downgrade<\/strong> your existing <strong>User Account(s)<\/strong> from administrator privileges to <strong>Standard User<\/strong> privileges.\u00a0 Also set up a <strong>strong password<\/strong> for your User Account, using a different password than your Administrator Account.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here is what the <strong>Windows<\/strong> help comments say:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Standard User<\/strong>:\u00a0 The standard account can help <strong>protect your computer<\/strong> by preventing users from making changes that affect everyone who uses the computer, such as deleting files that are required for the computer to work.
