They set up headquarters in Jerusalem at the site of the <strong>Temple of Solomon<\/strong>, leading to their name as Templars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Within two hundred years they became powerful enough to defy all but the <strong>Pope<\/strong>. \u00a0In 1139, Pope Innocent II issued a\u00a0<strong>papal bull<\/strong> that they could pass freely through any border, owed no taxes, and granted them total freedom from every authority but his own. They owned over nine thousand manors and castles across Europe, all tax-free.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the <strong>Middle Ages<\/strong>, they established processes for the modern system of <strong>notary services<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>banking<\/strong>, loans, and mortgages that were widely used by the European monarchies. They became central as <strong>notaries<\/strong> for <strong>business transactions<\/strong> and <strong>official documents<\/strong>. These systems remain largely unchanged today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Knights_and_Brothers\"><\/span>Knights and Brothers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Knights-Templar-Red-Cross-Pattee.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4099\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Knights-Templar-Red-Cross-Pattee.jpg\" alt=\"Knights Templar Red Cross Pattee\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>The highest class was the <strong>noble knight<\/strong> in a <strong>white robe<\/strong>. When sworn into the order, the initiation made the knight a <strong>monk<\/strong>. In 1147, Pope Eugenius III decreed that only the Knights Templar would wear a special <strong>red cross<\/strong> with blunt wedge-shaped arms called the Heraldic Cross patt\u00e9e on the left breasts of their white robes. The red cross\u00a0indicated their willingness to shed blood or die in battle and became their required dress. They fought bravely and were highly respected by Muslims.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The most common class,\u00a0called brothers or <strong>sergeants<\/strong>, were non-noble mounted men-at-arms and held many positions including guard, steward, squire, blacksmith, builder or other support vocations. They wore black or <strong>brown robes<\/strong>, partially garbed in chain mail or plate mail, not as complete as the knights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All three classes of Templars wore the order&#8217;s red cross.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Knights_Templar_Create_International_Banking_System\"><\/span>Knights\u00a0Templar Create International Banking System<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Templars were involved in banking, farming, livestock, manufacturing, import, and export.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They created the first European-wide system of <strong>international banking<\/strong>. Their convents, especially in London and Paris, became clearing-houses for the deposit, disbursement, and transfer of funds. The banking system\u2019s reputation for reliability, efficiency, and honesty attracted church leaders,\u00a0kings, nobles,\u00a0and merchants, to entrust their funds and valuable property to the Templars. Nobles placed their wealth and businesses under the trust and control of the Templars, to <strong>manage<\/strong> and <strong>safeguard<\/strong> until they returned from the Crusades.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Templars would issue a <strong>letter of credit<\/strong>, describing a depositor&#8217;s holdings. Along the journey, the depositor could withdraw funds at other Templar locations. It may have been the first formal system to support the use of <strong>checks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Templar <strong>priest class<\/strong> was similar to a\u00a0military chaplain. They wore <strong>green robes<\/strong>, conducted religious services, led prayers, and were assigned <strong>record keeping<\/strong> and letter writing.\u00a0The <strong>Clergy<\/strong> of the <strong>Order of the Knights Templar<\/strong> were highly educated and became important <strong>notaries<\/strong> for all Templar business, official documents, orders, and proclamations.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Seal_of_the_Knights_Templar\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Knights-Templars-Seal.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3626\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Knights-Templars-Seal.jpg\" alt=\"Knights Templar Seal\" width=\"320\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>Seal of the Knights\u00a0Templar<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is the earliest known <strong>seal<\/strong> for the <strong>Grand Master<\/strong> of the Temple. Used as early as 1158 as the seal of the Grand Master Bertrand de Blanchefort.\u00a0The seal shows two knights in armor riding on one horse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Blanchefort&#8217;s seal: SIGILLUM MILITUM (Latin, Seal of the Soldiers) obverse;<br \/>\nCHRISTI DE TEMPLO (Latin, Christ&#8217;s Temple) reverse.<br \/>\nThe Dome of the Rock (or a circular dome of the <strong>Church of the Holy Sepulchre<\/strong>) the site where <strong>Jesus of Nazareth<\/strong> was crucified at a place known as &#8220;Calvary&#8221; or &#8220;Golgotha&#8221;, and Jesus&#8217;s empty tomb, where he is said to have been buried and resurrected.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"End_of_the_Knights_Templar\"><\/span>End of the Knights\u00a0Templar<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1302, the sultan of Egypt defeated the Knights Templar in Palestine. \u00a0With the loss, all serious hope of recovering and retaining the <strong>Holy City<\/strong> was gone. The services of the Templars were no longer required.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the death of Pope Benedict XI in 1304, <strong>King Philip IV<\/strong> of <strong>France<\/strong>, Philip the Fair, son of St. Louis, succeeded in having the archbishop of Bourdeaux become the new <strong>Pope Clement V<\/strong>. The Pope moved\u00a0the Holy See from Rome to France\u00a0and was an obedient slave of the French\u00a0King.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jealous of the Templars\u2019 wealth and power, and deeply in debt to the order, Philip influenced a <strong>papal inquisition<\/strong> of hearings, trials, and depositions of Templar leaders in several countries in Europe. \u00a0They were falsely charged with the denial of <strong>Christ<\/strong>, spitting on the cross, obscene rituals, idolatry and other offenses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At dawn on <strong>Friday, October 13th, 1307<\/strong>, orders were opened simultaneously by French Sheriffs and all the Templars in the French dominions were arrested. \u00a0<strong>Friday the 13th<\/strong> remains a superstitious day of bad luck today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Knights-Templar-Jacques-de-Molay.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4101\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Knights-Templar-Jacques-de-Molay.jpg\" alt=\"Knights Templar Jacques de Molay\" width=\"100\" height=\"131\" \/><\/a>The French Knights denied the charges and were tortured. Some died during torture. Some who \u201cconfessed\u201d were released. On rolls of <strong>parchment<\/strong>, <strong>notaries<\/strong>\u00a0recorded and attested the forced confessions received. They attached hand-drawn <strong>notarial seals<\/strong> or <strong>rubrics<\/strong>.\u00a0Notaries of the inquisition swore in the presence of the bishop and the inquisitor to exercise the <strong>office of notary<\/strong> faithfully.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1312, Pope Clement V disbanded the order under pressure from King Philip.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In France, all who denied wrongdoing were <strong>burned at the stake<\/strong>.\u00a0Knights Templar <strong>Grand Master Jacques de Molay<\/strong>\u00a0(see image) retracted his forced confession and is reported to have issued a final <strong>curse<\/strong> before he was burned in Paris in 1314.\u00a0He called his persecutors, Pope Clement and King Philip, to join him and account for themselves before the <strong>court of God<\/strong> within the year. Within a month Pope Clement was dead, by the end of the year Philip was also dead.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Knights_Templar_Vanish\"><\/span>The Knights Templar\u00a0Vanish<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There were 20,000 members of the Templars across Europe and 15,000 <strong>Templar Houses<\/strong>. About 10 percent of members were knights. Only a small number of members were executed. Some joined other orders. Others returned to secular life on pensions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many Templar structures are still standing. Their extensive archive of detailed <strong>records<\/strong> of their business holdings and financial transactions\u00a0was never found.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some historians and treasure hunters believe that some Knights Templar escaped the inquisition and sailed away with a <strong>treasure<\/strong> in their <strong>fleet of ships<\/strong>. One legend is that they were guardians of the <strong>Holy Grail<\/strong>. Their naval force of 18 ships that had been anchored at the Templar Atlantic port of\u00a0<strong>La Rochelle<\/strong> disappeared.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some believe\u00a0they inherited maps and other secrets of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/notaries-ancient-phoenicia-1500-bc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Phoenicians<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and sailed to <strong>Portugal<\/strong> or <strong>Scotland<\/strong>. \u00a0From Scotland, 300 colonists sailed in 12 ships in 1398 (before <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/notary-with-christopher-columbus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Columbus<\/a><\/strong><\/span>) with <strong>Prince Henry Sinclair<\/strong>, a Grand Master of the Knights Templar to <strong>Nova Scotia<\/strong> (New Scotland), Canada. A castle was built there and a great treasure is believed buried at <strong>Oak Island<\/strong>.\u00a0Scottish Templar families included <strong>Sinclair<\/strong>\u00a0or <strong>Saint Clair<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Portugal, the Knights Templar was not persecuted. They were protected by King Dinis I and the <strong>Order of Christ<\/strong> was founded in 1319 in Castro Marim, later moved to <strong>Tomar<\/strong>, as the successor to the assets of the Knights Templar, largely for their aid in defeating the Moors during the <strong>Reconquista<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The mystery of the disappearance of the Knights Templar and their treasure is the subject of books, movies, and documentaries, including <strong>The<\/strong> <strong>Da Vinci Code<\/strong> and the 2004 movie <strong>National Treasure<\/strong> starring Nicolas Cage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Image Credits<\/strong>:<br \/>\n1.
