These pills stand <strong>unrivaled<\/strong> as a <strong>tonic<\/strong> for the blood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Published in the Julesburg Grit, <strong>Julesburg, Colorado<\/strong>, September 22, <strong>1898<\/strong>, and many other newspapers.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dr_Williams_Medicine_Company_Testimonial\"><\/span>Dr. Williams Medicine Company Testimonial<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Dr. Williams Pink Pills for Pale People<\/b> was a late 19th to early 20th-century patent medicine containing iron oxide and magnesium sulfate.\u00a0It was produced by <strong>Dr. Williams Medicine Company<\/strong> and advertised in 82 countries as a <strong>miracle cure<\/strong> for many ailments. \u00a0The Pink Pills were widely used across the <strong>British Empire<\/strong>. \u00a0A box of 40 pills cost 50 cents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was essentially an iron supplement and helped people with <strong>pale skin<\/strong>, a symptom of iron-deficiency <strong>anemia<\/strong>, which boosted its reputation and some customers made a testimonial.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The product name used 4 words starting with the letter P, using <strong>alliteration<\/strong> as a device to gain consumer attention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In America, few patent medicines\u00a0actually received a <strong>patent<\/strong>, but instead, the name was <strong>trademarked<\/strong>. \u00a0The medicines were self-prescribed, not a prescription from a doctor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The company used an \u201c<strong>advertorial<\/strong>\u201d style to promote the\u00a0product. The ads appeared to be news stories reporting a miracle in a\u00a0distant town. \u00a0The <strong>miracle cure<\/strong> was always the\u00a0result of someone taking Dr. Williams Pink Pills, making a testimonial.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Canadian\u00a0Senator <strong>George Fulford<\/strong>, of Brockville, Ontario, formed G. T. Fulford &amp; Company in 1887 to manufacture patent medicines. In 1890, his\u00a0company acquired the rights to\u00a0Dr. Williams Pink Pills and Fulford became a millionaire. \u00a0In 1905,\u00a0he was the first Canadian to die in an automobile accident.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notary_Authority_to_take_Sworn_Statements\"><\/span>Notary Authority to take Sworn Statements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notaries are authorized to take sworn statements, or <strong>affidavits<\/strong>, from a <strong>witness<\/strong>. The sworn statements were used as customer <strong>testimonials<\/strong> in <strong>advertising<\/strong> by some medicine companies.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Modern_Consumer_Protection_Advertising_Regulations\"><\/span>Modern Consumer Protection Advertising Regulations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The passage of the <strong>Pure Food and Drug Act<\/strong> of 1906 required more accurate and honest labeling of patent medicines.
