Cloud Storage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">SpiderOak<strong>\u00ae<\/strong> is one of many <strong>cloud storage<\/strong> vendors to choose from.\u00a0 Vendors usually provide several gigabytes (GB) of free cloud storage, with an option to buy more storage.\u00a0 However, users must be careful to read the specifications and terms of service to determine if the stored files are <strong>secure<\/strong> and <strong>encrypted<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have compared many cloud storage vendors including <strong>Google Drive\u00ae<\/strong>, <strong>Dropbox\u00ae<\/strong>, <strong>SugarSync\u00ae<\/strong>, <strong>Mozy\u00ae<\/strong>, <strong>Carbonite\u00ae<\/strong>, <strong>justcloud\u00ae<\/strong>, <strong>OneDrive\u00ae<\/strong>, and <strong>livedrive\u00ae<\/strong>.\u00a0 Many of these storage providers might work for casual storage of music, videos, photos, and non-confidential information.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Encryption_versus_Plain_Text_Cloud_Storage\"><\/span>Encryption versus Plain Text Cloud Storage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When storing <strong>confidential<\/strong> information, users must understand the use of <strong>encryption<\/strong>.\u00a0 Some vendors only provide encryption while the data is in transit from your device to the cloud storage.\u00a0 This protects against <strong>eavesdropping<\/strong> and data <strong>modification<\/strong> along the way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But, many vendors then decrypt the data once it arrives at the cloud storage and store the data in <strong>plain text<\/strong>.\u00a0 That means that someone could break in to the cloud storage and read the data.\u00a0 That is not acceptable for secure storage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some vendors encrypt the data while it is in transit to the cloud, and then store the data in <strong>encrypted<\/strong> form.\u00a0 This is more secure, but there is still a potential <strong>security<\/strong> problem.\u00a0 If the cloud storage vendor knows the <strong>encryption key<\/strong>, which many of them do, then they could use the encryption key to decrypt the data and read it.\u00a0 This is not acceptable for secure and private storage.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Private_Encryption_Key\"><\/span>Private Encryption Key<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>SpiderOak<\/strong> uses <strong>Zero-Knowledge<\/strong> privacy protection.\u00a0 The data is encrypted on your device before it is sent over the internet (Pre-Internet Encryption) and then stored in encrypted form in the cloud storage.\u00a0 You generate and keep the <strong>encryption key<\/strong> and do not provide it to SpiderOak.\u00a0 So, the data is secure, only you have the encryption key.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You must keep the encryption key secure and must not lose it.\u00a0 Since SpiderOak does not have the key, if you lose it, you will not be able to access the data stored in the cloud.\u00a0 You should have a strong key, kept in a secure location, such as a password manager like <strong>KeePassXC<\/strong> or<strong> Bitwarden\u00ae<\/strong>.\u00a0 You should also keep a copy of the encryption key in a backup location, such as a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/sentrysafe-chw20221-fireproof-waterproof-chest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>fireproof safe<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I found that the combination of end-to-end encryption, encrypted storage, and Zero-Knowledge privacy protection to be the best security available for personal or business use.\u00a0 When doing an <strong>initial backup<\/strong> of files from my computer to SpiderOak, the <strong>data transfer speed<\/strong> was slower than some other cloud storage providers, but I have not found that to be a problem, once the initial backup was complete.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once the files are backed up to the cloud, you can <strong>synchronize<\/strong> several devices to keep the files up to date and accessible from home, work or on the road, while using a desktop or notebook PC, tablet PC or smartphone.\u00a0 You can also share files with others for collaboration<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Redundant_Local_Offline_Backup\"><\/span>Redundant Local Offline Backup<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For redundant backup, you should also keep another local <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/offline-backup-data-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offline backup<\/a><\/strong><\/span> of your data files.\u00a0 I use a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/backup-files-to-micro-sd-memory-card\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">microSDXC<\/a><\/strong><\/span> <strong>flash memory card<\/strong> which is compact, rugged and operates in a wide range of temperatures.\u00a0 One copy can be kept in a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/sentrysafe-chw20221-fireproof-waterproof-chest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fireproof safe<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, while another copy can remain in your computer, set up for daily backups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Update [2024-05-07]: SpiderOak ONE<\/strong> had a <strong>service outage<\/strong> when it was moved to a new data center. Support did not provide adequate information or status updates to inform customers when the service would likely be restored.\u00a0 Many customers were frustrated at the outage and lack of information, and sought alternative services. Several years ago, SpiderOak changed its business model and mission to focus on cybersecurity in space operations for national defense. Consumer cloud storage services are no longer a focus of SpiderOak.
