A remote ancestor came from Normandy with William the Conqueror, in 1065, and at this date, our subject still has the ancient Weston coat-of-arms and crest. A nearer ancestor was <strong>Thomas Weston<\/strong> of London, who bought and outfitted the good ship <strong>Mayflower<\/strong> in 1620 at his own expense.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The family organized a colony and settled in <strong>Salem<\/strong>, Mass., in 1644. His grandfather was one of the first settlers in the wilds of Maine in 1774. He was a merchant, land surveyor and magistrate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The father of Eugene settled in West Springfield, Mass., in 1847, but in 1850 purchased a <strong>farm<\/strong> near Henry, Ill., which Eugene and his brothers tilled, attending the common school a part of each winter. In the winter of 1857-58 Eugene taught a <strong>school<\/strong>. In June of the latter year, he went to <strong>St. Louis<\/strong>; thence in August to <strong>Kansas<\/strong> near Atchison, where he clerked in a <strong>store<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pikes_Peak_Gold_Rush\"><\/span>Pikes Peak Gold Rush<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The following spring of 1859 he joined a party for <strong>Pike&#8217;s Peak<\/strong>, but in due course met a big stampede of more than 3.000 wagons returning from the alleged <strong>gold fields<\/strong>, which caused his company to turn back.<\/p>\n<p>On reaching the Missouri river, Weston joined a <strong>trading outfit<\/strong> bound to <strong>New Mexico<\/strong>. In the winter of &#8217;59-60, he <strong>taught school<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the spring of 1860 he drove an <strong>ox-team<\/strong> to <strong>California Gulch<\/strong>, worked in the mines and prospected until the ensuing fall; then located in <strong>Canon City<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Farming_in_Pueblo_County\"><\/span>Farming in Pueblo County<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1861 he <strong>farmed<\/strong> a tract of land on the <strong>St. Charles<\/strong> in <strong>Pueblo County<\/strong>. The next year he engaged in the same pursuit near the town of Pueblo, where he promoted the erection of the first <strong>flouring mill<\/strong> built in southern Colorado, for which service he was granted an eighth individual interest in the <strong>Pueblo townsite<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Law_Enforcement_in_Pueblo\"><\/span>Law Enforcement in Pueblo<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the fall of 1862 he was elected <strong>constable<\/strong>, and for nearly two years thereafter was the only executive officer in the county, which embraced all the territory between Beaver Creek, twenty-two miles west of Pueblo, to the east line of the state, including a part of Huerfano. When a sheriff was elected Weston became his <strong>deputy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>During the summer of 1864, he was an active partner in building a swing <strong>ferry-boat<\/strong> across the <strong>Arkansas River<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sand_Creek_Massacre_3d_Colorado_Cavalry\"><\/span><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2389\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sand-Creek-Massacre-monument-200x140.jpg\" alt=\"Sand Creek Massacre monument\" width=\"200\" height=\"140\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/sand\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sand Creek Massacre<\/a><\/span>, 3d Colorado Cavalry<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In August 1864, he enlisted in Company G., <strong>3d Colorado cavalry<\/strong>, and with it served in the memorable <strong>Battle of Sand Creek<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pueblo_County_Clerk_and_Court_Clerk\"><\/span>Pueblo County Clerk and Court Clerk<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He built and filled the first <strong>ice house<\/strong> in Pueblo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the spring of 1865, he was appointed <strong>deputy county clerk<\/strong>. There was no courthouse, no <strong>county or court seals<\/strong>, no books of record save a three folio ruled day-book. The county and court records and papers were jumbled together in a <strong>candle box<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>He was also appointed <strong>deputy clerk<\/strong> of the <strong>United States court<\/strong>, 3d judicial district, and on taking possession found the papers of the court in the same condition. Later he was made <strong>clerk of the county court<\/strong>: secured a license to practice as <strong>claim agent<\/strong> to procure discharges and pay for the enlisted men of the <strong>3d cavalry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"First_Territorial_Notary_Public_in_Pueblo_County\"><\/span><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2387\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Photo-Colorado-Governor-John-Evans-150x233.jpg\" alt=\"Colorado Governor John Evans\" width=\"150\" height=\"233\" \/>First Territorial Notary Public in Pueblo County<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mr. Weston was the <strong>first territorial notary public<\/strong> in all the region <strong>south of Denver<\/strong>. When he entered the service of <strong>Pueblo county<\/strong>, its warrants were worth only 15 cents on the dollar: there was no money in the treasury; no county commissioners, no assessor. The public debt amounted to $5,000. Only men were notaries.]<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pueblo_County_Clerk\"><\/span>Pueblo County Clerk<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the fall of 1865 he was elected <strong>county clerk<\/strong>, and soon afterward drafted a bill authorizing a special assessment, which was passed by the <strong>territorial legislature<\/strong> with an emergency clause.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The commissioners appointed an assessor, and in the spring of 1866, the country was assessed for a special tax to pay its indebtedness and for current expenses. He caused the collection of a forfeited criminal bond, with the proceeds of which a <strong>building for court<\/strong> uses was purchased. He designed the <strong>county and court seals<\/strong> and secured from Philadelphia a full set of <strong>record books<\/strong> at a cost of $600.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pueblo_County_Assessor\"><\/span>Pueblo County Assessor<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He was appointed <strong>assessor<\/strong>, and also <strong>census taker<\/strong>, finding in the latter capacity a total <strong>population of 800<\/strong> in the county which then embraced 40 by 160 square miles. There were only five marriageable girls, three of whom were of Mexican birth.<\/p>\n<p>In 1866 he pre-empted the tract which is now covered by the <strong>courthouse<\/strong> and some of the more costly residences of the city but lost it by a contest.<\/p>\n<p>In the fall of 1867, he was a candidate for <strong>county clerk<\/strong> but was defeated.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Merchandise_Freighter\"><\/span>Merchandise Freighter<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the winter of 1867-68, he <strong>freighted merchandise<\/strong> between <strong>Pueblo<\/strong>, <strong>Fort Lyon<\/strong>, <strong>Trinidad<\/strong>, and <strong>Denver<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Deputy_US_Marshall\"><\/span>Deputy U.S. Marshall<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the spring of 1868, as <strong>deputy United States marshal<\/strong>, he was given charge of a band of robbers and outlaws, led by the notorious Elias Coe, alias &#8220;Tex,&#8221; then being tried in the United States court.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Builder_and_Contractor\"><\/span>Builder and Contractor<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the summer of 1868. as a <strong>contractor<\/strong> and <strong>builder<\/strong>, he built <strong>St. Peter&#8217;s church<\/strong>. The next winter he took a contract to subdivide public lands in and near the present town of <strong>La Junta<\/strong>, and during that season secured a charter, and, with Mr. Lewis Conley, organized the first <strong>Odd Fellows&#8217; lodge<\/strong> instituted south of the Divide.<\/p>\n<p>The season of 1870 was passed in contracting and building.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Moved_to_Canon_City\"><\/span>Moved to Canon City<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the spring of 1871, he settled in <strong>Canon City<\/strong>, and the ensuing fall <strong>organized Christ Church<\/strong> at that place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1876 he made a <strong>collection of the minerals<\/strong> of <strong>Fremont County<\/strong> for the <strong>Centennial Exposition<\/strong>, but it was not forwarded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1878 he engaged in the <strong>real estate<\/strong> business, and in 1881 organized the <strong>Colorado Pioneers&#8217; society<\/strong> of Fremont County, being <strong>elected secretary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1882 he was appointed a commissioner to collect the minerals of that county for exhibition at Denver.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Feb. 25. 1884, he <strong>married<\/strong> Miss Nellie Pearson of Manchester, N. H. He was one of the promoters of the <strong>county Horticultural society<\/strong> and was its secretary.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Grand_Canon_Plaster_Cement_Company\"><\/span>Grand Canon Plaster &amp; Cement Company<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1890 he was the chief organizer and vice-president of the <strong>Grand Canon Plaster &amp; Cement company<\/strong>, to utilize the immense deposit of <strong>gypsum<\/strong> and <strong>alabaster<\/strong> east of <strong>Canon City<\/strong>, spending the summer in developing this the most wonderful deposit of alabaster in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1891 he collected the minerals of Fremont County for the <strong>Mineral Palace of Pueblo<\/strong>.
