Lopez de Jerez<\/strong> was secretary and <strong>notary<\/strong> for <strong>conquistador<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Francisco Pizarro<\/strong> and wrote the <strong><em>True Account of the Conquest of Peru,<\/em><\/strong> published in Seville, Spain in 1534.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is the most influential account of the Pizarro expedition&#8217;s arrival in the central <strong>Andes Mountains<\/strong> of <strong>South America<\/strong>, and the capture of <strong>Atahualpa<\/strong>, the <strong>Inca<\/strong> ruler of a large and powerful civilization, at <strong>Cajamarca<\/strong>, northern <strong>Peru<\/strong>, on November 16, 1532.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another Spanish <strong>notary<\/strong>, <strong>Pedro Sancho<\/strong> de la Hoz, wrote a <strong><em>Report on the Distribution of the Ransom of Atahualpa<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Notary Jerez<\/strong> was injured during the battle with the Incas but became wealthy from his share of the <strong>ransom<\/strong> received in exchange for the broken promise of freedom for Emperor Atahualpa. <!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pizarro_Expedition\"><\/span>Pizarro Expedition<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Pizarro Expedition<\/strong> left <strong>Panama<\/strong> for Peru in 1530, under a license from <strong>King Charles I<\/strong>.\u00a0 Pizarro had accompanied <strong>Balboa<\/strong> and was mayor of Panama City.\u00a0 In 1532, the expedition arrived at the ruins of <strong>Tumbes<\/strong> and learned of a civil war between armies of two royal brothers, <strong>Huascar<\/strong> and <strong>Atahualpa<\/strong>.\u00a0 Atahualpa had destroyed Tumbes, and was about 200 miles to the southeast, with an army in the mountains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2253\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Francisco-Pizarro-Signature-200x120.jpg\" alt=\"Francisco Pizarro Signature\" width=\"200\" height=\"120\" \/>Pizarro&#8217;s men were the first Europeans to climb into the Andes Mountains, following a well-built Inca road.\u00a0 The Spanish force numbered 168, with 102 on foot and 62 on horseback.\u00a0 Pizarro was age 54.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In front of the group was Captain <strong>Hernando de Soto<\/strong>, age 32, who later explored Florida and discovered the Mississippi River.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Four of the twelve notaries would later write eyewitness accounts of the expedition.\u00a0 Pizarro came from a poor family and could not read or write.\u00a0 (See signature)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On Friday, November 15, 1532, the force climbed over a mountain pass and saw the green valley of <strong>Cajamarca<\/strong>, at 9,000 feet.\u00a0 Beyond was the camp of Atahualpa and the Inca army of 30,000 men.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Notary Miguel de Estete<\/strong> wrote, &#8220;<em>So many tents were visible, it truly frightened us.\u00a0 But it was not appropriate to show fear nor to turn back.\u00a0 After thoroughly observing the town and the tents, we descended <\/em><em>into the valley and entered the town of Cajamarca.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0 The town appeared empty, most inhabitants were hiding or had fled.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Notary Francisco de Xerez<\/strong> wrote, &#8220;<em>The town has 2,000 inhabitants.\u00a0 The plaza is larger than any in Spain and enclosed by a wall.\u00a0 The houses are more than 200 paces in length, very well made, surrounded by strong walls, 15 feet high.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gold_Ransom_for_Emperor_Atahualpa\"><\/span><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2255\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" width=\"200\" height=\"220\" \/>Gold Ransom for Emperor Atahualpa<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the Battle of Cajamarca, Emperor Atahualpa was captured when invited into town for negotiations.\u00a0 The armored Spanish soldiers emerged from hiding and attacked the Inca warriors with cannons, crossbows, swords and arquebus (musket) fire.\u00a0 Many Incas were killed or ran away, in fear of the Spanish weapons and <strong>horses<\/strong>, which they had never seen before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Because of his wealth and power, Atahualpa negotiated a fortune in <strong>gold<\/strong> and <strong>silver<\/strong> as a <strong>ransom<\/strong> for his release.\u00a0\u00a0 He would send messengers instructing his subjects to bring enough gold objects to fill his captivity room 22 feet long, 17 feet wide, and 8 feet high.\u00a0 And, within several months, the adjacent room would also be filled twice with silver.\u00a0 Much of the treasure would come from the <strong>capital<\/strong> hub in <strong>Cuzco<\/strong>, and it would take months to transport.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2256\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Atahualpa-ransom-room-Cajamarca-Peru-120x90.jpg\" alt=\"Atahualpa ransom room Cajamarca Peru\" width=\"120\" height=\"90\" \/>Pizarro ordered a <strong>notary<\/strong> to write up the terms of the ransom for Atahualpa.\u00a0 Pizarro promised that once the ransom was received, the Inca leader would be released to <strong>Quito<\/strong>, where he could rule a kingdom in the north.\u00a0 But, this was a lie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although the Spanish collected 7 tons of gold as ransom, they charged <strong>Atahualpa<\/strong> with various crimes, held a mock trial, and put him to death by strangulation on July 26, 1533.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Inca Empire<\/strong> was vast, 3 times the size of Spain, and twice the population.\u00a0 It included Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia and Colombia.\u00a0 <strong>Atahualpa<\/strong> commanded an army of 100,000 men and 10 million inhabitants.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Advance_Party_Arrives_to_Claim_Cuzco\"><\/span>Advance Party Arrives to Claim Cuzco<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pizarro sent three men, a <strong>Basque notary<\/strong>, and two sailors, south to <strong>Cuzco<\/strong>, a 600-mile journey.\u00a0 Pizarro had been assured it held vast quantities of gold.\u00a0 The orders to his men were to \u201ctake possession\u201d of the city for Spain and to help speed the collection of gold and silver for Atahualpa\u2019s ransom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2257\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Inca-Empire-expansion-map-200x370.jpg\" alt=\"Inca Empire expansion map\" width=\"200\" height=\"370\" \/>The men were the first Europeans to be carried in <strong>royal Inca litters<\/strong> in the Andes and to view and enter the Inca capital in May 1533.\u00a0 On their journey, they witnessed blue-green glaciers, mountain villages in green valleys, huge herds of <strong>alpacas<\/strong> and <strong>llamas<\/strong>, and crossed deep gorges on hanging bridges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After a month of travel, they arrived at <strong>Cuzco<\/strong>.\u00a0 <em>\u201cThis city is the greatest and finest that has ever been seen in this realm or even [elsewhere] in the Indies,\u201d the Spaniards later wrote the King.<\/em>\u00a0 They were amazed at the precision of the interlocking carved stones used for buildings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There were four palaces for lords,\u00a0<em>the best of them is the house of <strong>Huayna Capac<\/strong>, a former chief [the father of <strong>Atahualpa<\/strong> and <strong>Huascar<\/strong>]<\/em>.\u00a0 There were many state-owned warehouses filled with food, goods, and supplies produced and gathered by millions of peasants across the empire, using a web of <strong>roads<\/strong>.\u00a0 Accountants kept track of warehouse inventories.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>As they had been instructed, the three Spaniards \u201ctook possession of that city of Cuzco in the name of His Majesty.\u201d The <strong>Basque notary, Juan Z\u00e1rate<\/strong>, dutifully drew up a document that he signed with a flourish and notarized with a <strong>seal<\/strong>, as puzzled natives no doubt watched over his shoulder. Neither the natives nor the two illiterate Spanish sailors who had accompanied him could read a word of what he had written.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pizarro arrived in Cuzco with an army of 500 soldiers on November 15, 1533, completing the military conquest of Peru.\u00a0 European diseases, including <strong>smallpox<\/strong>, brought by explorers and conquistadors also devastated the native population, which had no immunity.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notary_as_Professional_Class_Occupation\"><\/span>Notary as Professional Class Occupation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During colonization, there were three main classes of professional occupations in Spanish Peru:\u00a0 churchmen, men with degrees in law or medicine, and notary-secretaries.\u00a0 <strong>Notaries<\/strong> in Spanish society came from the families of artisans, small merchants and occasionally, petty <strong>hidalgos<\/strong>.\u00a0 Most notaries came from <strong>Andalusia<\/strong>, Spain.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notary_Offices_in_Spanish_Peru\"><\/span>Notary Offices in Spanish Peru<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The notary was a versatile workhorse of the Spanish government. \u00a0 Notaries trained as an <strong>apprentice<\/strong> in the office of a notary public.\u00a0 Many arrived in Peru in their mid to late teens.\u00a0 Training was complete by age twenty, and the notary apprentice negotiated at royal court for the title of &#8220;<strong>His Majesty&#8217;s Notary<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then the notary set up an office in a specific city, either by purchase or political favor.\u00a0 Many notary offices were passed on from father to son.\u00a0 A successful notary office had one or two partners, and one to three apprentices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notary offices were clustered in the <strong>town plaza<\/strong>, near the city council office.\u00a0 There were living quarters in the back of the office for the staff.\u00a0 Even remote villages and small expeditions had one or two notaries.\u00a0 At Cajamarca, there were twelve trained notaries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many notaries worked to build a successful practice in <strong>Peru<\/strong>, then sold it, and used the money to return to <strong>Spain<\/strong> and buy a notary office there.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notary_Records_and_Additional_Occupations\"><\/span>Notary Records and Additional Occupations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notaries were primarily experts in legal form and terminology and could draw up a <strong>power of attorney<\/strong>, testament, official command, ordinance or petition.\u00a0 They recorded witness testimony, court transcripts, attorneys&#8217; briefs and petitions, and made copies of documents.\u00a0 The Spanish placed great importance on record keeping, and notary records provide an important account of major historic events and everyday life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notaries also served as town clerks, court clerks, deputy constables, treasurers, accountants, and <strong>ecclesiastic notaries<\/strong>.\u00a0 Some notaries served as <strong>procuradors<\/strong>, or untitled lawyers, either assisting lawyers or competing with them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many were in prime position to observe important developments, were part of the courthouse crowd and were able to seize political opportunities.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pizarros_Death_in_Lima\"><\/span><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2254\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Francisco-Pizarro-statue-Lima-Peru-200x266.jpg\" alt=\"Francisco Pizarro statue Lima Peru\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" \/>Pizarro&#8217;s Death in Lima<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although Spanish explorers reached Peru in 1520, consecutive history of Spanish Peru began in 1532, with Pizarro&#8217;s conquering expedition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the conquest of the Incas, Francisco Pizarro served as Governor and Adelantado of Peru from 1532 until his assassination in <strong>Lima<\/strong> in 1541, by the son of <strong>Diego de Almagro<\/strong>, a former expedition partner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pizarro was stabbed in the throat while drawing his sword.\u00a0 Before he died, he painted a cross on the floor with his blood and cried for <strong>Jesus Christ<\/strong>.\u00a0 His coffin lies in <strong>Lima Cathedral<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Movie_Royal_Hunt_of_the_Sun\"><\/span>Movie: Royal Hunt of the Sun<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 1969 adventure movie, <em><strong>The Royal Hunt of the Sun<\/strong><\/em>, filmed in Peru, stars Robert Shaw as Pizarro and Christopher Plummer as Atahualpa.\u00a0 Leonard Whiting plays Pizarro&#8217;s <strong>notary<\/strong>.\u00a0 I found it on <strong>YouTube<\/strong> along with video documentaries about Pizarro and the Incas.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Photo_Credits\"><\/span>Photo Credits<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>1.
