officials in Greek <strong>city-states<\/strong> who performed document writing, witnessing and record keeping duties.\u00a0 They were early <strong>notaries<\/strong>, and their practices were later adopted under the <strong>Roman Empire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Aristotle<\/strong>, a Greek philosopher, a student of <strong>Plato<\/strong> at the<strong> School of Athens<\/strong>, and teacher of <strong>Alexander the Great<\/strong>, mentioned in <strong>360 BC<\/strong>, in Classical Greece, there were &#8220;<em>public officials charged with drafting the id=\"Notary_Predecessors\"><\/span>Notary Predecessors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The earliest predecessors of modern notaries were in Ancient Greece and Rome, where notary functions were dispersed among different officials.\u00a0 Notaries kept a <strong>register<\/strong>, for documents from private contracts to international conventions.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Singraphos_and_Apographos\"><\/span><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft wp-image-2039 size-medium\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" height=\"133\" \/>Singraphos and Apographos<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Greek officials mentioned by Aristotle were known as <strong>singraphos<\/strong> and <strong>apographos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>singraphos<\/strong> were regarded as true notaries, whose main function was to keep a <strong>public register<\/strong>.\u00a0 They were very common in the city of <strong>Athens<\/strong>.\u00a0 Contracts were not granted if not recorded in the public register held by them.\u00a0 Each tribe had two singraphos, who were more confined to the gentile family.\u00a0 They enjoyed great consideration and <strong>honor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mnemonics\"><\/span>Mnemonics<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There were also other officials who appear to be predecessors of the modem notary.\u00a0 The <strong>mnemonics<\/strong>, also known as Promnemon Sympromnemon, were &#8220;<em>in charge of formalizing and registering public treaties and conventions and private contracts.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But, there is incomplete information about the full functions of each of these professions in Ancient Greece.\u00a0 This leads to a debate among scholars.\u00a0 Conclusions about their contributions appear to be mostly anecdotal.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notary_Witness\"><\/span>Notary Witness<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many Greeks stored <strong>wealth<\/strong> in <strong>gold<\/strong> and <strong>silver coins<\/strong>.\u00a0 They created accounts to <strong>loan money<\/strong> to <strong>merchants<\/strong> who could earn a profit and received interest in return.\u00a0 Lending was accompanied in different cities by various ceremonies.\u00a0 A primary element was to secure <strong>witnesses<\/strong> to the transaction, to prevent the borrower from later denying the loan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sometimes the <strong>loan contract<\/strong> was made in the presence of a <strong>notary<\/strong>, appointed by the State.\u00a0 More often, it was made before witnesses chosen by the parties.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alexander_the_Great_in_Egypt_333_BC\"><\/span><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2036\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" 333 BC<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Macedonian king <strong>Alexander the Great<\/strong> conquered Egypt in 333 BC.\u00a0 He created a new capital in <strong>Alexandria<\/strong>,\u00a0 bringing a <strong>Greek government<\/strong> into power for a thousand years, until the <strong>Arab invasion<\/strong> in 640 AD.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ptolemy_Dynasty\"><\/span>Ptolemy Dynasty<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Macedonian dynasty<\/strong> of the <strong>Ptolemies<\/strong> (meaning &#8220;aggressive, warlike&#8221;), ruled from the Greek city of <strong>Alexandria<\/strong>, until 30 BC, when the <strong>Romans<\/strong> gained control.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All fourteen kings of this dynasty were called <strong>Ptolemy<\/strong>, numbered by modern historians I to XV (Ptolemy VII never reigned).\u00a0 The dynasty included seven queens named <strong>Cleopatra<\/strong> (meaning &#8220;glory of the father&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Greek notaries<\/strong> came to Egypt during this time.\u00a0 The Greek influence extended east across Alexander&#8217;s Empire to <strong>India<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2035 size-full\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" \/>The English name <strong>Egypt<\/strong> is derived from the ancient Greek word for the country, <strong>A\u00edgyptos<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Pharaoh<\/strong> comes from the Greek word <strong>phara\u00f4<\/strong>, from the ancient Egyptian word for Great House or <strong>palace<\/strong> of the king.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rosetta_Stone_196_BC\"><\/span>Rosetta Stone, 196 BC<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some Egyptian <strong>scribes<\/strong> took <strong>Greek names<\/strong> and learned to write Greek.\u00a0 There were <strong>Greek notaries<\/strong> and <strong>Egyptian notaries<\/strong> during the <strong>Ptolemy<\/strong> reign.\u00a0 The <strong>Rosetta Stone<\/strong>, issued in 196 BC, contains a decree by Ptolemy V, written in Egyptian <strong>hieroglyphs<\/strong>, demotic script, and Greek.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 provided critical missing information, needed by scholars to decipher the Ancient Egyptian language and hieroglyphic script, by using the Greek translation.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Codification_of_Laws\"><\/span>Codification of Laws<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dates found in notarial contracts and tax receipts help to reconstruct events.\u00a0 Law and governance served to provide legitimacy and to extract taxes.\u00a0 The Ptolemy reign <strong>codified<\/strong> and clarified <strong>Pharaonic law<\/strong>, which applied to native Egyptians.\u00a0 Greeks fell under a form of <strong>Greek law<\/strong>, and cities, strongholds of the immigrant nobility and royalty, fell under <strong>royal law<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Contract_Witnesses\"><\/span>Contract Witnesses<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Early Ptolemaic contracts required <strong>sixteen<\/strong> <strong>witnesses<\/strong> and often required that witnesses transcribe a <strong>copy<\/strong> of the contract.\u00a0 More witnesses and more copies made it easier to tax transactions.\u00a0 Earlier Egyptian contracts required four to eight <strong>witnesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The people grew tired of these excessive witness measures.\u00a0 In 200 BC, the witness copy procedure was abandoned, due to the rise of <strong>state notaries<\/strong>.\u00a0 Contracts were required to be notarized, aiding the taxation on the transaction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recording of contracts had a long history, back to Pharaonic times.\u00a0 Copies of important documents were <strong>deposited<\/strong> into <strong>state archives<\/strong>.\u00a0 On certain Greek contracts and other documents, <strong>red stamps<\/strong> were used to <strong>acknowledge receipt<\/strong> for recording.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notaries, <strong>agoranomoi<\/strong> in Greek, are evidenced by documents issued from the <strong>nomarchy<\/strong> (regional government) of Pathyris and its capital, <strong>Krokodilopolis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Migration_of_Greek_Law\"><\/span><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft wp-image-2037 notaries affected Egypt, Rome, the <strong>Mediterranean<\/strong> region and across Alexander the Great&#8217;s Empire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Modern <strong>maritime law<\/strong> originated from the <strong>maritime court<\/strong> on the Greek <strong>Isle of Rhodes<\/strong> near Turkey.\u00a0 The law code traveled to the <strong>Holy Land<\/strong> and then to France and <strong>England<\/strong> during the <strong>Crusades<\/strong>, spreading far and wide, and has lasted for centuries on the seas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Photo\/image
