confusing, false, exaggerated and incorrect information from sellers, many based in <strong>China<\/strong>.\u00a0 From my shopping experience and online research, I compiled some information into this <strong>LED Flashlight Guide<\/strong> to help navigate the confusing process of buying an energy-efficient LED flashlight.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Brightness_and_Lumens_Claims\"><\/span>Brightness and Lumens Claims<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After I purchased my first LED flashlight on eBay, I learned from research that the listing claimed the flashlight had a <strong>brightness<\/strong>, measured in <strong>lumens<\/strong> (lm), that was not possible, based on the <strong>LED device<\/strong> used.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Exaggerated claims of high lumens are common as a <strong>deceptive sales<\/strong> method of attracting buyers.\u00a0 I complained to the seller and got a refund for my purchase.\u00a0 I learned not to trust the exaggerated lumens claims made in the seller listings.\u00a0 They are sometimes twice the actual brightness.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No_LED_Device_Type_Specified\"><\/span>No LED Device Type Specified<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second problem is that the sellers often do not specify the actual <strong>LED device<\/strong> used in the flashlight.\u00a0 Once you know the actual LED device, you can verify the device <strong>specifications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cree_LEDs\"><\/span><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1907\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cree-Inc-logo-200x50.jpg\" alt=\"Cree Inc logo\" width=\"200\" height=\"50\" \/>Cree LEDs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Cree\u00ae<\/strong> is the leading <strong>manufacturer<\/strong> of LEDs for flashlights and lighting, and they have detailed <strong>specifications<\/strong> on their website.\u00a0 So, the first step is to look for ads where they state the actual LED device used in the flashlight.\u00a0 Otherwise, you do not know what you are buying, so avoid those ads.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Brightness_Varies_by_Battery_Voltage_and_Current\"><\/span>Brightness Varies by Battery Voltage and Current<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The LED <strong>brightness<\/strong> in <strong>lumens<\/strong> depends on the battery <strong>voltage<\/strong> and the <strong>current<\/strong> flowing thru the LED.\u00a0 The current will vary depending on the <strong>LED driver circuit<\/strong> in the flashlight.\u00a0 It might include <strong>multiple modes<\/strong>: <strong>high<\/strong>, <strong>medium<\/strong>, and <strong>low brightness<\/strong> modes by clicking a tail switch.\u00a0 Some LED flashlights only include a <strong>single mode<\/strong>, on or off.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I recommend choosing a LED flashlight with a high and low brightness mode (2 modes), or a high, medium and low brightness mode (3 modes).\u00a0 <strong>Low brightness<\/strong> is adequate for many situations and your battery will last much longer.\u00a0 <strong>High brightness<\/strong> may be too bright for close-up work and will discharge the battery faster.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For comparison, a 60-watt incandescent light bulb produces about 800 lumens.\u00a0 A BIC\u00ae lighter produces about 15 lumens.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cree_LEDs-2\"><\/span><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1908\" class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The chart below gives the <strong>specifications<\/strong> for different LEDs manufactured by Cree.\u00a0 For example, if the LED flashlight is using a <strong>Cree XM-L LED<\/strong>, look it up in the chart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That LED device can produce a maximum brightness of about <strong>1,000 lumens<\/strong>, at 3,000 ma, so sellers claiming a higher brightness than stated in the device specifications are not accurate and should be avoided.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cree LED device types are identified by 3 letters, such as XM-L, XP-E, XP-G or XR-E.\u00a0 Some devices include a 2, such as XM-L2, which indicates second generation, brighter technology.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"LED_Manufacturer_Bin_Sorts\"><\/span>LED Manufacturer Bin Sorts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When LEDs are manufactured, due to <strong>manufacturing variations<\/strong>, they are not all identical in performance.\u00a0 Some are brighter or dimmer or have color output variations.\u00a0 They are tested and <strong>sorted<\/strong> by variations into <strong>bins<\/strong>, with a letter\/number rating, such as <strong>Q3<\/strong> or <strong>Q5<\/strong>.\u00a0 But Q3 and Q5 are not LED device types, they are <strong>bin sort<\/strong> variations of a LED device.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many seller ads do not specify the actual LED device used in the flashlight, they only give a bin sort rating.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t buy those flashlights.\u00a0\u00a0 Higher bin ratings are more efficient and are brighter.\u00a0 Q5 is brighter than Q3.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Battery_Type_Choices\"><\/span><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1909\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" flashlight that can use either a single <strong>AA battery<\/strong> (1.2-volt NiMH or 1.5-volt alkaline) or a single <strong>14500 battery<\/strong> (3.7-volt Li-ion), which are the same size.\u00a0 A 14500 battery is 14 mm in diameter x 50 mm long.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This provides battery flexibility for the user and the flashlight is a <strong>mini-flashlight<\/strong>, easy to carry in a pocket or on a <strong>keychain<\/strong>, so you always have it with you for every day carry (EDC).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1512\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Panasonic-eneloop-rechargeable-batteries-AA-4pack-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Panasonic eneloop rechargeable batteries AA\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>I use <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/panasonic-eneloop-rechargeable-batteries\/\"><strong>eneloop\u00ae rechargeable<\/strong><\/a><\/span> 1.2 volt NiMH <strong>AA batteries<\/strong> for my digital cameras, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/kaito-ka360-voyager-dx-emergency-radio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emergency AM\/FM\/weather radios<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/cobra-cxt545-28-mile-two-way-radio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cobra\u00ae emergency two-way radios<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, and other household devices such as radios, remote controls, wall clocks, thermostat, and smoke alarms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">LED flashlights using <strong>rechargeable<\/strong> batteries are <strong>eco-friendly<\/strong>, good for the <strong>environment<\/strong>, using little energy and saving natural resources, compared to using incandescent flashlights with non-rechargeable alkaline batteries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As part of my <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/green-business-policy-mobile-notary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">green business policy<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, I also have several foldable <strong>solar panels<\/strong> that can recharge AA batteries during a power outage or off-grid situations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other LED flashlight models use <span class=\"st\"><strong>18650<\/strong>,<\/span> <span class=\"st\"><strong>16340<\/strong>\/<strong>CR123A<\/strong>, or button cell batteries.\u00a0 18650 batteries are larger and have more storage capacity than 14500.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Battery_Storage_Capacities\"><\/span>Battery Storage Capacities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Battery storage capacities are rated in <strong>milliamp-hours<\/strong> (<strong>mAh<\/strong>).\u00a0 If a battery has a rating of 1200 mAh, and the LED is using 300 mA of current, then the battery will last for 1200\/300 or 4 hours at that brightness mode.\u00a0 If it has a low brightness mode of 100 mA, it will last for 1200\/100 or 12 hours at that low brightness mode.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Battery_Safety_Tips\"><\/span>Battery Safety Tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"st\">When choosing <strong>lithium-ion<\/strong> (<strong>Li-ion<\/strong>) batteries, be aware that <strong>unprotected batteries<\/strong> may <strong>overheat<\/strong> and pose a <strong>fire hazard<\/strong> if they are <strong>overcharged<\/strong>, <strong>overloaded<\/strong> (short circuit) or continue to operate after they are discharged to an <strong>under-voltage<\/strong> level.\u00a0 For <strong>safety<\/strong>, purchase and use <strong>protected batteries<\/strong>.\u00a0 They are more expensive, but they have a <strong>safety protection circuit<\/strong> built in, attached to the end of the battery, making it slightly longer.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"st\">Check dimensions to make sure a protected battery will fit your device and battery charger.\u00a0 Protected batteries also have <strong>vent holes<\/strong> on the top, positive terminal end. \u00a0 It should say protected or protection on the battery label.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Use a smart <strong>battery charger<\/strong> that automatically turns off when the battery is fully charged.<\/p>\n<p>Do not keep batteries in a box or drawer where they can move around, <strong>short circuit<\/strong> or come into contact with metal objects or <strong>flammable material<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caution<\/strong>: Do not insert a 14500 3.7 volt battery into a device that requires an AA 1.2 volt or 1.5-volt battery only.\u00a0 The higher voltage of the 14500 battery can destroy your device.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Floodlight_or_Spotlight\"><\/span><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1910\" focused in a narrow beam, or <strong>spotlight<\/strong>, for longer distance or &#8220;<strong>throw<\/strong>&#8220;.\u00a0 Adjustable focus or zoom is valuable since you can use the flashlight as a floodlight or a spotlight.\u00a0 More lumens means the spotlight has a longer throw.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Economy_LED_Flashlight_for_General_Purpose_Use\"><\/span>Economy LED Flashlight for General Purpose Use<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For <strong>general-purpose<\/strong>, short-distance, short-duration lighting use, such as an occasional power outage, finding a door keyhole or address number, Halloween, walking the dog, walking to the yard or mailbox, searching for an item in storage, changing a flat tire, or doing home maintenance, an inexpensive <strong>general-purpose<\/strong> LED flashlight works fine.\u00a0 The prices are low, with many choices under $10, so you can buy 2 or more to have a <strong>backup<\/strong>.\u00a0 Some bundles sold include a battery and battery charger.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Expensive_LED_Flashlight_for_Tactical_Use\"><\/span>Expensive LED Flashlight for Tactical Use<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For more serious, long-distance or long-duration lighting situations, such as <strong>security<\/strong>, <strong>tactical<\/strong>, medical, everyday work use, disasters, search and rescue, camping, hiking, skiing, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, boating, or vacation cabins, spend more money ($50 and up) and buy a better quality LED flashlight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Look for a <strong>waterproof, rugged<\/strong> design, with an easy grip, and high, medium, and low brightness modes, using multiple batteries or 18650 batteries for a longer duration, and bring extra batteries with you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also look for <strong>emergency features<\/strong> such as <strong>flashing<\/strong> (strobe) mode or <strong>SOS<\/strong> mode to attract attention in an emergency.\u00a0 High brightness may be useful to temporarily blind or disorient a potential attacker while you get away.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cree_LED_Specification_Chart\"><\/span>Cree LED Specification Chart<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<table id=\"tablepress-4\"
