including the Francisco Vazquez (Vasquez) de <strong>Coronado Expedition<\/strong> of the American Southwest in 1540.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before the expedition began, a muster roll and inventory of armaments was written by a <strong>notary<\/strong>, <strong>Juan de Cuevas<\/strong>.\u00a0 This official record has survived in the Archive of the Indies, providing valuable historic information. <!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Castaneda_Narrative_1554_Winship_Translation_1896\"><\/span>Castaneda Narrative 1554, Winship Translation 1896<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Soldier historian <strong>Pedro de Castaneda<\/strong>, wrote a Spanish narrative of the expedition around 1554.\u00a0 It was translated into English in 1896, by <strong>George Parker Winship<\/strong>, as <em>The Coronado Expedition, 1540-1542<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Coronado_Expedition_Route\"><\/span>Coronado Expedition Route<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The expedition traveled north along the western side of the Sierra Madre Mountains of <strong>New Spain<\/strong> (Mexico) and current day Arizona, then east across New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas in search of the <strong>Seven Cities<\/strong> of <strong>Cibola<\/strong>, a fabled region of <strong>gold<\/strong>, stopping for winter camp on the <strong>Rio Grande<\/strong> near current day Bernalillo.\u00a0 The exact route is disputed by scholars.\u00a0 There were also excursions made away from the main route by <strong>Garcia Lopez de Cardenas<\/strong> to the Grand Canyon, and by <strong>Hernando de Alvarado<\/strong> along the Rio Grande and to the buffalo plains.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Coronado-expedition-map-500x280.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1766\" Archives by Aiton<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The muster list was discovered in archives during research by <strong>Arthur S. Aiton<\/strong>, of the University of Michigan, and published in 1939, for the 400th anniversary of the Coronado Expedition.\u00a0 The list includes the name of each man, rank, number of horses assigned, and personal armament.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Coronado_Expedition_Army\"><\/span>Coronado Expedition Army<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/harquebus-180x150.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1440\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/harquebus-180x150.jpg\" alt=\"harquebus\" width=\"180\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The muster list for the Coronado Expedition to <strong>Cibola<\/strong> includes 225 horse soldiers, 62 foot soldiers, 558 horses, and one mule.\u00a0 Accompanying the soldiers were 800 or more native <strong>Indian<\/strong> allies from <strong>Mexico<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The horsemen carried lances and swords, some carried extra daggers.\u00a0 The foot soldiers carried 22 <strong>harquebuses<\/strong> (<strong>muskets<\/strong>), 15 <strong>crossbows<\/strong>, and a variety of swords, daggers and native weapons from Mexico.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Only a few soldiers had a full suit of <strong>armor<\/strong>.\u00a0 Nearly all soldiers had one or two pieces of armor, kneepieces, coat of mail, helmet, corselet (body armor), bevor (neck armor) or gauntlets (glove armor).\u00a0 Most wore native <strong>buckskin<\/strong> suits of armor, for more comfort, while still effective against Indian weapons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Of the 300 soldiers that began, only 100 survived the journey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Accompanying the army were supplies, including thousands of livestock, and slaves, servants, <strong>Moors<\/strong>, and support staff.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Main_Body_and_Advanced_Departure_from_Compostela_New_Galicia\"><\/span>Main Body and Advanced Departure from Compostela, New Galicia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The expedition assembled in the city of <strong>Compostela<\/strong>, <strong>New Galicia<\/strong>, a province of <strong>New Spain<\/strong>, in February, 1540.\u00a0 The muster was reviewed by the <strong>Viceroy<\/strong>.\u00a0 According to Castaneda&#8217;s narrative, 37 men, including Coronado, the <strong>religious leaders<\/strong>, and a small military escort left in advance.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notarized_Oaths_of_Allegiance\"><\/span>Notarized Oaths of Allegiance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before the journey, each member was required to take a <strong>sworn<\/strong> <strong>oath<\/strong>, to serve <strong>God<\/strong> and <strong>His Majesty<\/strong>.\u00a0 The muster roll closes with an attested copy of the oaths of <strong>fealty<\/strong> (<strong>vassal<\/strong> allegiance to a <strong>lord<\/strong>), administered to Coronado and the members of the expedition.\u00a0 It is dated several days after the muster, when the notaries had time to get the papers in order.\u00a0 It is attested by <strong>Juan de Cuevas<\/strong>, <strong>Chief Notary<\/strong> of Mines and Reports.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Translation_from_16th_Century_Spanish\"><\/span>Translation from 16th Century Spanish<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The muster roll was written with many abbreviations, in the <strong>Spanish language<\/strong> of the 16th century, which varies from modern day Spanish in accents, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.\u00a0 Below are some excerpts, translated from the muster roll:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Muster_Roll_Cibola_Soldiers\"><\/span><em><strong>Muster Roll, Cibola Soldiers<\/strong><\/em><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p <strong>Juan de Cuevas<\/strong>, <strong>Chief Notary<\/strong> for Mines and Reports for His Majesty in this New Spain, declare and attest, that in the city of Compostela in New Galicia, in New Spain [near current day Guadalajara, on the Pacific Ocean in western Mexico], with the illustrious lord <strong>Don Antonio de Mendoza<\/strong> present, who is <strong>Viceroy<\/strong> and <strong>Governor<\/strong> of this <strong>New Spain<\/strong> for His Majesty, and Gonzalo de Salazar (factor), Peralmindez Cherino (veedor of New Spain), Cristobal de Onate (veedor of the said province), and many other people, the muster was conducted of all the people who are going to the land newly discovered by Father Provincial fray <strong>Marcos de Niza<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Francisco Vasquez de Coronado<\/strong> is going as <strong>Captain General<\/strong> of the expedition.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The muster was conducted on the 22nd day of February, in the year <strong>1540<\/strong>, in the following form and manner, with the lord licenciado Maldonado being present:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>2.\u00a0 Captain General Francisco Vazquez de <strong>Coronado<\/strong> <strong>swore<\/strong> that he is taking on this expedition, in the service of His Majesty, twenty-two or twenty-three <strong>horses<\/strong> and three or four sets of <strong>armored<\/strong> horse trappings for riding with long and short stirrups.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>3.\u00a0 <strong>Hernando de Alvarado<\/strong>, Captain of Artillery, is taking four horses, a chain mail vest with sleeves, and native arms and armor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>4.\u00a0 Captain General Francisco <strong>Coronado<\/strong> swore by <strong>Almighty God<\/strong>, by his <strong>Holy Mother<\/strong>, by a <strong>cross<\/strong> that was there, and by the words of the <strong>Holy Gospels<\/strong>, (where he placed his right hand in a <strong>missal book<\/strong>, in the hands of Reverend Father fray <strong>Francisco de Vitoria<\/strong>, a professed brother of the Order of the Lord <strong>Saint Francis<\/strong>), that he will exercise the office of Captain General, (to which he has been appointed by his lordship in His Majesty&#8217;s name for the said expedition and land), as a good <strong>Christian<\/strong>, <strong>vassal<\/strong>, and <strong>servant<\/strong> of <strong>His Majesty<\/strong>.\u00a0 And he will act in the service of God and His Majesty.\u00a0 As a good <strong>caballero hidalgo<\/strong> must do, he will, to the best of his knowledge and judgment, <strong>obey<\/strong> and <strong>fulfill<\/strong> the <strong>King&#8217;s directives<\/strong> and those of the Lord Viceroy in his royal name.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>5.\u00a0 Then the field master, alferez mayor, captains, <strong>knights<\/strong>, and the rest of the people gave their <strong>oaths<\/strong>, each one for himself and in the form required by law, exactly as described above, placing their right hands on the <strong>cross<\/strong> and <strong>missal book<\/strong>.\u00a0 Under this obligation they promised to <strong>obey<\/strong> Francisco Vazquez de <strong>Coronado<\/strong>, their <strong>Captain General<\/strong>, and to any other Captain General whom His Majesty, or the said Lord Viceroy, in his royal name, might commission.\u00a0 And they pledged not to abandon their captaincies and <strong>banners<\/strong> without his royal order.\u00a0 And they will do everything they are obligated to do as good captains, people, and <strong>vassals<\/strong> of <strong>His Majesty<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>This took place in the presence of His Lordship, and the said knights, and those people mentioned above, and <strong>before me<\/strong>, <strong>Juan de Cuevas<\/strong>, <strong>Chief Notary<\/strong> of Their Majesties mines.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>6.\u00a0 In confirmation of this, and by order of the illustrious Lord Viceroy of New Spain, I <strong>drew up<\/strong> the present <strong>muster roll<\/strong> in the city of <strong>Compostela<\/strong>, on the 27th day of February, <strong>1540<\/strong>.\u00a0 It is set down in writing on ten folios of paper in manuscript.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong> Juan de Cuevas<\/strong>\u00a0 [<strong>rubric<\/strong>]<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Juan_de_Cuevas_Notary_for_Coronado_Expedition\"><\/span>Juan de Cuevas, Notary for Coronado Expedition<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Juan de Cuevas, Chief Notary, recorded the details and took <strong>sworn statements<\/strong> from Coronado and his soldiers for the muster roll, which is an important surviving document in the <strong>history<\/strong> of the American Southwest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cuevas was from Aranda de Duero, Spain, son of Licenciado Alonso Cuevas, and served under <strong>Hernando Cortes<\/strong> in the <strong>conquest of Mexico<\/strong> from 1519 to 1521.\u00a0 He arrived in New Spain with royal treasurers and financed people going on entradas.\u00a0 He was penanced and reconciled during the <strong>Spanish Inquisition<\/strong>.\u00a0 He later acquired an <strong>encomienda<\/strong> southeast of Mexico City.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Search_for_Gold_Treasure\"><\/span>Search for Gold Treasure<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Coronado did not find the <strong>Seven Cities of Gold <\/strong>at<strong> Cibola <\/strong>or<strong> Quivira<\/strong>, but gold and silver was later discovered and mined at several locations in the region.\u00a0 There are legends of lost Spanish <strong>gold mines<\/strong>.\u00a0 Some modern explorers continue to study art and <strong>symbols<\/strong> made by Spanish explorers, found on large rocks in Arizona and New Mexico, for clues on the location of <strong>gold
