style=\"text-align: justify;\">A bond provides <strong>protection to the public<\/strong>.\u00a0 If the notary makes an <strong>error<\/strong> or <strong>omission<\/strong>, the customer may make a <strong>claim<\/strong> to the <strong>bonding company<\/strong> for <strong>damages<\/strong>.\u00a0 Upon confirmation of the claim, the bonding company will pay the customer for the damages, up to the maximum amount of the bond.\u00a0 Then the notary must <strong>reimburse<\/strong> the bonding company.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Errors_and_Omissions_E_O_Insurance\"><\/span>Errors and Omissions (E&amp;O) Insurance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A notary may choose to purchase a bond, but it is now optional.\u00a0 Many notaries choose to purchase\u00a0notary insurance, specifically, <strong>errors and omissions<\/strong> (<strong>E&amp;O<\/strong>) <strong>insurance<\/strong>.\u00a0 It is not required.\u00a0 E&amp;O notary insurance is inexpensive and is a\u00a0deductible <strong>business expense<\/strong>.\u00a0 Policies are available with face amounts from $10,000 and up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">E&amp;O notary insurance <strong>protects the notary<\/strong>.\u00a0 If the notary makes an error or omission, the customer makes a claim to the insurance company for damages.\u00a0 The insurance company will pay the customer for the damages, up to the face amount of the policy.\u00a0 The policy also provides the notary with <strong>legal defense<\/strong> in the claim or dispute.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While it is prudent for a notary to carry E&amp;O notary insurance, it is best to keep the coverage amount\u00a0<strong>confidential<\/strong> to avoid becoming a lawsuit target.\u00a0 The notary should consult with a knowledgeable, licensed <strong>insurance agent<\/strong> to choose the proper coverage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although a notary bond is no longer required by Colorado law, notaries in many other states are required to purchase a notary bond.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The more knowledge, training, and experience the notary has, the less likely that a notary error or omission will occur.\u00a0 Notaries should use <strong>reasonable
