<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/notary-with-conquistador-onate-new-mexico-1598\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Conquistador<\/strong> <strong>Juan de Onate<\/strong><\/a><\/span> founded a capital at an Indian Pueblo at <strong>San Gabriel<\/strong>, north of <strong>Santa Fe<\/strong>, in the Province of <strong>New Mexico<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Onate served as the first Governor and may also have followed the <strong>Rio Grande<\/strong> River north into the <strong>San Luis Valley<\/strong> of southern <strong>Colorado<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(see artist sketch of adobe pueblo at El Cuartelejo)<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pueblo_Revolt\"><\/span>Pueblo Revolt<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After many years of harsh Spanish rule, the Pueblo Indians along the Rio Grande staged the <strong>Pueblo Revolt<\/strong> of 1680, and expelled the Spanish for 12 years. The Spanish returned in 1692 for a <strong>reconquest<\/strong>, and a plan for more friendly treatment of the Indians, with more tolerance for native culture and religion.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Picuris_Pueblo_at_El_Cuartelejo\"><\/span>Picuris Pueblo at El Cuartelejo<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picuris-Pueblo-San-Lorenzo-mission_150x110.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1543\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picuris-Pueblo-San-Lorenzo-mission_150x110.jpg\" alt=\"Picuris Pueblo San Lorenzo mission\" width=\"150\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a>Some <strong>Picuris Pueblo<\/strong> (see photo of mission) Indians south of<strong> Taos<\/strong> had fled the region in 1696, and moved northeast to live with a federation of <strong>Apache<\/strong> tribes on the <strong>Great Plains<\/strong>. The Pueblo Indians built <strong>adobe<\/strong> housing and irrigated crop fields in a region known as <strong>El Cuartelejo<\/strong> (&#8220;The Far Quarter&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1706, Captain <strong>Juan de Ulibarri<\/strong>, at age 36, led 40 soldiers and militia, and 100 Indian allies north from Taos, New Mexico to retrieve the Picuris from El Cuartelejo.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Juan_de_Ulibarri\"><\/span>Juan de Ulibarri<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ulibarri was born in the New World and came to New Mexico in 1693 with <strong>Don Diego de Vargas<\/strong> during the reconquest.\u00a0 He served as a &#8220;sergeant-major&#8221; at Santa Fe when he was picked for the mission to El Cuartelejo.\u00a0 Afterward, he was promoted to general.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He had a Pueblo Indian <strong>scout<\/strong> named <strong>Jose Naranjo<\/strong>, who had assisted Governor Vargas during the reconquest.\u00a0 Naranjo knew about the land beyond the frontier, and served as a guide for other Spaniards in Colorado in later years.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"French_Encroachment\"><\/span>French Encroachment<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The region north of Taos was regarded as frontier, inhabited by hostile Indians.\u00a0 After the <strong>French explorations<\/strong> of <strong>Joliet<\/strong> (1673) and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/la-salle-expedition-louisiana-territory-1682\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>La Salle<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (1682), the Spanish feared that the French were encroaching into the Colorado region.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ulibarris_Route_to_El_Cuartelejo\"><\/span>Ulibarri&#8217;s Route to El Cuartelejo<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/After-Coronado-book-AB-Thomas.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2974\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/After-Coronado-book-AB-Thomas.jpg\" alt=\"After Coronado book AB Thomas\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ulibarri\u00a0traveled north from Santa Fe, then Taos, along the Wet Mountains, through Cuchara Pass, west of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Spanish-Peaks-from-Lathrop-State-Park_150x110.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1544\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Spanish-Peaks-from-Lathrop-State-Park_150x110.jpg\" alt=\"Spanish Peaks from Lathrop State Park\" width=\"150\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a>Spanish Peaks<\/strong>, (see photo) near La Veta.\u00a0 He reached the Rio de San Juan Baptista (Huerfano River) at <strong>Badito<\/strong>.\u00a0 He crossed the <strong>Arkansas River<\/strong>, (which he named the <strong>R\u00edo Grande de San Francisco<\/strong>), near current-day <strong>Pueblo, Colorado<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From there, the expedition continued east, along the Arkansas River.\u00a0 On August 4, 1706, Ulibarri reached <strong>El Cuartelejo<\/strong>, 20 days after leaving Santa Fe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(Also see <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/Downloads_small\/Spanish-exploration-map_1696-1727.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spanish exploration map of Ulibarri route<\/a><\/strong><\/span> from the book, <em><strong>After Coronado,\u00a0Spanish Exploration Northeast of New Mexico, 1696\u20111727<\/strong>, Documents from the Archives of Spain, Mexico and New Mexico,\u00a0<\/em>published in 1935,\u00a0translated and\u00a0edited by Alfred Barnaby Thomas (A. Thomas), which includes <em>The Diary of Juan de Ulibarri to El Cuartelejo, 1706<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"French_Guns_on_the_Great_Plains\"><\/span>French Guns on the Great Plains<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Picur\u00eds<\/strong> were happy to leave, with a Spanish escort, because mounted <strong>Comanches<\/strong> and <strong>Pawnees<\/strong>, in possession of <strong>firearms<\/strong> supplied by <strong>French<\/strong>\u00a0traders from the Mississippi Valley, now invaded the region.\u00a0 The <strong>Apaches<\/strong> showed Ulibarri the French-made guns they had recovered in battle.\u00a0 This confirmed Spanish fears of French encroachment.\u00a0 The Apaches begged Ulibarri to stay and fight their enemies, but he declined to join a planned war party.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/French-musket-Charleville-1866_200x33.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1542\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/French-musket-Charleville-1866_200x33.jpg\" alt=\"French musket Charleville 1866\" width=\"200\" height=\"33\" \/><\/a>The first guns used were lightweight, smoothbore, French flintlock muskets, made in Charleville, France.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Spanish_Claim_to_Colorado\"><\/span>Spanish Claim to Colorado<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/El-Quartelejo-map.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2973\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/El-Quartelejo-map.jpg\" alt=\"El Quartelejo map Ulibarri route\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>To strengthen the claim of Spain on the region, Ulibarri had the Apache leaders swear an <strong>oath of loyalty<\/strong> to <strong>King Philip V<\/strong>.\u00a0 He also made the first <strong>recorded claim<\/strong> to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/colorado-day-statehood-august-1-1876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Colorado<\/strong><\/a><\/span> soil in the name of Spain.\u00a0 He claimed the land drained by the <strong>Rio Grande<\/strong> and <strong>Arkansas River<\/strong> as the <strong>Province of San Luis<\/strong>. \u00a0(France had already claimed the land drained by the Arkansas as part of Louisiana in 1682.) In a ceremony he recorded in his journal, after mounting a hill, with a Spanish padre, soldiers and Apache chiefs, Ulibarri wrote:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cWednesday, the fourth (of August, 1706).<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201c\u2026.we ascended to the ridge where many chiefs of the settlements of El Cuartelejo were awaiting us. After we joined them with great pleasure to one another, we went on together\u2026until we arrived on the last hill, where there was a most holy cross which the Apaches had set up.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cA chief of the Apaches came to me and took me forward to where the most holy cross stood.\u00a0 After he had showed it to us, all the Spaniards and Christian Indians alighted, kissed, adored, and worshipped it.\u00a0 Then the Royal Ensign Don Francisco de Valdes took it up, and we carried it in procession as far as the Rancherias, which was very close, at the foot of the hill.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cWe continued thus until we arrived at the plaza which the rancherias formed.\u00a0 The Reverend Father Fray Domingo de Aranz took up in his hand the most holy cross and intoned the Te Deum Laudemus (O God, we praise Thee) and the rest of the prayers and sang three times the hymn in praise of the sacrament. After these holy ceremonies were over, the Royal Ensign Don Francisco de Valdes drew his sword, and I, after making a note of the events of the day and the hours on which we arrived, said in a clear, intelligible voice:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/New-Spain-Coat-of-Arms_100x100.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1545\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/New-Spain-Coat-of-Arms_100x100.jpg\" alt=\"New Spain Coat of Arms\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>\u2018Knights, Companions and Friends: Let the broad new province of <strong>San Luis<\/strong> and the great settlement of <strong>Santo Domingo<\/strong> of <strong>El Cuartelejo<\/strong> be pacified by the arms of us who are the vassals of our monarch, king and natural lord, <strong>Don Philip V<\/strong> \u2013 may he live forever.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The royal ensign said: &#8216;Is there any one to contradict?&#8217;\u00a0 All responded, &#8216;No.&#8217;\u00a0 Then he said: &#8216;Long live the king! Long live the king! Long live the king!&#8217; and cutting the air in all four directions with his sword the ensign signaled for the discharge of the guns.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>After throwing up our hats and making other signs of rejoicing, the ceremony came to an end.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Epilogue_After_Ulibarri\"><\/span><strong>Epilogue, After Ulibarri<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When a Spanish expedition of 100 men led by <strong>Villasur<\/strong> returned to El Cuartelejo and the plains region in 1720, to capture <strong>French fur traders<\/strong> to learn about French ambitions, more than half of the troops were <strong>massacred<\/strong> by <strong>Pawnee Indians<\/strong> at the <strong>Platte<\/strong> and Loup Rivers.\u00a0 With no gold found, the Spanish lost interest and influence in the Great Plains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">French <strong>fur traders<\/strong> traveled further west to trap and trade <strong>beaver<\/strong> pelts.\u00a0 Over time, the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/colorado-day-statehood-august-1-1876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Comanches<\/strong><\/a><\/span> drove the <strong>Apaches<\/strong> from the plains, southwest to New Mexico and Arizona.\u00a0 Comanches raided Taos and Pecos for <strong>Spanish horses<\/strong>, which they used and traded to the French for guns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1779, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/colorado-day-statehood-august-1-1876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Comanche Chief <strong>Cuerno Verde<\/strong><\/a><\/span> (Green Horn) was killed in battle, near <strong>Rye<\/strong>, south of <strong>Pueblo<\/strong>, during a Spanish campaign of 800 soldiers, led by Governor <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/colorado-day-statehood-august-1-1876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Juan Bautista de Anza<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 Eventually, the plains buffalo were gone and the Indians were moved to reservations after the Civil War.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Notes\"><\/span>Notes:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The Franciscan padres carried a missal book. The Spanish arrived on the feast day of Saint Dominic, or Santo Domingo.<\/li>\n<li>The location of <strong>El Cuartelejo<\/strong> is disputed.\u00a0 Some historians place it in eastern <strong>Colorado<\/strong>, near Las Animas, or in Kiowa County, others place it further east, in <strong>Scott County, Kansas<\/strong>.\u00a0 There are <strong>adobe ruins<\/strong> at Lake Scott State Park, near Scott City.\u00a0 Ulibarri left a journal of his trip, but scholars argue theories about at least three different routes taken. <strong>Alfred B.
