<strong>Conquistador Juan de O\u00f1ate<\/strong> claimed all the land north of the <strong>Rio Grande<\/strong> for <strong>Spain<\/strong>.\u00a0 He founded the Province of <strong>Santa Fe<\/strong> de Nuevo M\u00e9xico and was its first colonial <strong>governor<\/strong> from 1598 to 1610.\u00a0 His party included a <strong>royal notary<\/strong>, <strong>Juan P\u00e9rez de Donis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Photo: O\u00f1ate Monument Center, Alcalde, NM<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The O\u00f1ate expedition was before the failed English colony in <strong>Jamestown<\/strong>, Virginia in 1607, and before the <strong>Pilgrims<\/strong> arrived at <strong>Plymouth Rock<\/strong> in 1620.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Onate_Noble_Blood\"><\/span>O\u00f1ate Noble Blood<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">Juan de O\u00f1ate, born in 1550 in Zacatecas, Mexico, was the son of <strong>conquistador<\/strong> and <strong>silver baron<\/strong> Crist\u00f3bal de O\u00f1ate, a descendant of the noble house of Haro.\u00a0 Juan de O\u00f1ate married Isabel de Tolosa Cort\u00e9s de Moctezuma, granddaughter of conquistador <strong>Hern\u00e1n Cort\u00e9s<\/strong>, and great-granddaughter of the <strong>Aztec Emperor Moctezuma<\/strong> (<strong>Montezuma<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Coronado_in_New_Mexico\"><\/span>Coronado in New Mexico<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">Before\u00a0O\u00f1ate, 48 years after <strong>Christopher Columbus<\/strong> landed in 1492, <strong>Coronado<\/strong> had explored <strong>New Mexico<\/strong> in 1540, including Indian pueblo villages near present-day <strong>Albuquerque<\/strong> and <strong>Taos<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Coronado<\/strong> traveled west to the <strong>Hopi<\/strong> in northeast <strong>Arizona<\/strong>, and east to the <strong>Plains Indian<\/strong> tribes of central <strong>Kansas<\/strong>, along the <strong>Arkansas River<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Onate_Mission_to_Colonize_New_Mexico\"><\/span>O\u00f1ate Mission to Colonize New Mexico<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\"><strong>King Philip II<\/strong> of <strong>Spain<\/strong> issued a <strong>royal decree<\/strong> authorizing O\u00f1ate to colonize the northern frontier of the Vice-royalty of <strong>New Spain<\/strong>, to search for gold and spread the <strong>Roman Catholic<\/strong> religion by establishing new missions in <strong>Nuevo M\u00e9xico<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Historia-de-la-Nueva-Mexico-100x150.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1442\" \/><\/a>A captain of the expedition, <strong>Gaspar P\u00e9rez de Villagr\u00e1<\/strong>, recorded O\u00f1ate\u2019s conquest of New Mexico in his <strong><i>Historia de la Nueva M\u00e9xico<\/i><\/strong> in 1610.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">The 4-mile long oxen-drawn caravan from Zacatecas consisted of 83 wagons and carts, 400 soldiers, 130 settler families, 10 Franciscan missionaries, and 7,000 head of sheep, goats, pigs, cattle, mules, and horses.\u00a0 Scouts rode ahead, seeking water and pasture for the livestock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">They followed the trail known as <strong>Jornada del Muerto<\/strong>, or Journey of the Dead Man, (part of El Camino Real) due to the scarcity of water.\u00a0 Wagons, carts, and pack mules carried mining and blacksmithing tools, medicines, Indian trade goods, seeds, plows, and other necessities and 3 cannons from the royal arsenal.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"First_Thanksgiving\"><\/span>First Thanksgiving<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">One settler wrote about their <strong>Thanksgiving<\/strong> festival:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/King-Philip-II-realm-1598-100x100.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1447\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/King-Philip-II-realm-1598-100x100.jpg\" alt=\"King Philip II realm 1598\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>On 30 April 1598, day of the Ascension of our Lord, at this Rio del Norte, <strong>Governor Don Juan de O\u00f1ate<\/strong> took possession of all the kingdoms and provinces of New Mexico, in the name of King Felipe II, our lord, in the presence of <strong>Juan P\u00e9rez de Donis<\/strong>, <strong>royal notary<\/strong> and secretary of the jurisdiction and expedition.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\"><em>There was a sermon, a great ecclesiastical and secular celebration, a great salute and rejoicing, and in the afternoon, a comedy.\u00a0 The <strong>royal standard<\/strong> was blessed and placed in charge of Francisco de Sosa Pe\u00f1alosa, the royal ensign.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">Other accounts say the Franciscans celebrated mass, and Father Martinez delivered a sermon.\u00a0 Then in a natural park, in a grove of cottonwood trees, O\u00f1ate read in a firm voice, the <strong>official act<\/strong> of possession from a long document, that was certified by the <strong>royal notary<\/strong>, making it a <strong>legal claim<\/strong>.\u00a0 It was witnessed by the priests and O\u00f1ate&#8217;s senior officers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">The army observed, drawn in formation on horseback, all suited in polished armor.\u00a0 When their commander and governor was done speaking,\u00a0 they fired musket shots into the air, while trumpets blew, and settlers cheered.\u00a0 O\u00f1ate then <strong>signed<\/strong> and <strong>sealed<\/strong> the <strong>official act<\/strong>, known as <strong>La Toma<\/strong>, while the royal ensign lifted and waved the <strong>royal banner<\/strong>.\u00a0 O\u00f1ate personally nailed a holy cross and the royal standard to a tree, kneeled and said a prayer.\u00a0 The site is known as the <strong>Robledo Campsite<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">At a village near El Paso, near current day <strong><span id=\"RDS-site\"><span id=\"MNGiSection\">San Elizario<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, the expedition invited the local Indians, named <strong>Mansos<\/strong>, to be their guests at a feast of <strong>Thanksgiving<\/strong> for their safe passage across the Chihuahuan Desert.\u00a0 The last 4 days on the desert were without water.\u00a0 They ate cactus, roots, and weeds to survive.\u00a0 They celebrated and ate fish, duck, geese, and deer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">This First Thanksgiving, near El Paso in 1598, was over 20 years before the <strong>Pilgrims&#8217;<\/strong> Thanksgiving in 1621 at <strong>Plymouth Colony<\/strong>.\u00a0 Before the English arrived at Jamestown Colony, Virginia, in 1607, the Spanish had already established hundreds of towns in the New World.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"First_Capital_at_San_Gabriel\"><\/span>First Capital at San Gabriel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ohkay-Owingeh-dancers-150x150.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1441\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" crossing the <strong>Rio Grande<\/strong> in April 1598, O\u00f1ate continued up the <strong>Rio Grande Valley<\/strong> to present-day northern New Mexico, where he camped at an Indian Pueblo, renaming it <strong>San Juan Pueblo<\/strong> (now Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">He appropriated another pueblo to establish the first capital of New Mexico nearby, at <strong>San Gabriel<\/strong>, near <strong>Espa\u00f1ola<\/strong>, about 25 miles north of <strong>Santa Fe<\/strong>.\u00a0 The capital was moved to <strong>Santa Fe<\/strong>\u00a0when it was founded in 1610.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">At <strong>San Gabriel<\/strong>, the first church in New Mexico was built.\u00a0 On September 8, 1598, following the first Mass, <strong>royal notary<\/strong> <strong>P\u00e9rez<\/strong> read a proclamation from Governor O\u00f1ate at the dedication of the new church.\u00a0 The highest purpose of the expedition was &#8220;<em>the conversion of the souls of these Indians, the exaltation of the Holy Catholic Church, and the preaching of the Holy Gospel<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">O\u00f1ate conceded New Mexico to the Franciscans, &#8220;<em>from now for all time, especially the <strong>Reverend Father Alonso Mart\u00ednez<\/strong>, apostolic commissary, with full faculty and license to build the churches and conventos they deem necessary for their residence and the better administration of Christian doctrine.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">After the signing of the proclamation, they celebrated with singing, dancing, gaming, and <strong>jousting<\/strong>.\u00a0 They performed a <strong>mock battle<\/strong> between the <strong>Moors<\/strong> on horseback, armed with lances and shields, and the <strong>Christians<\/strong> on foot, armed with <strong>arquebuses<\/strong> (muskets).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mw-redirect\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Aztec\">From each Indian settlement, O\u00f1ate demanded that Indian tribal leaders pledge obedience to him, the King of Spain, and a new God.\u00a0 The <strong>royal notary<\/strong> drew up their sworn statements, and then certified, endorsed and stamped the documents with the governor&#8217;s <strong>great<\/strong> <strong>seal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Acoma_War\"><\/span>Acoma War<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/harquebus-180x150.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1440\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/harquebus-180x150.jpg\" alt=\"harquebus\" width=\"180\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>In October 1598, the <strong>Acoma Pueblo<\/strong> people resisted demands to provide supplies to the occupying Spanish military.\u00a0 During a skirmish, 11 Spaniards were killed, including O\u00f1ate\u2019s nephew.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In January 1599, O\u00f1ate retaliated with the <strong>Acoma War<\/strong>, which left 800 villagers dead, including men, women, and children.\u00a0 The remaining 80 men were enslaved by <strong>decree<\/strong> of O\u00f1ate. \u00a0The Spaniards amputated one foot of each of the 80 Acoma men over the age of twenty-five.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_Expeditions_by_Onate\"><\/span>Other Expeditions by O\u00f1ate<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">O\u00f1ate made other expeditions in the region.\u00a0 In 1601, he journeyed to central Kansas, in search of the fabled <strong>city of gold<\/strong>, <strong>Quivira<\/strong>.\u00a0 In 1605, he followed the <strong>Colorado River<\/strong> to its mouth in the Gulf of California, in search of a <strong>port<\/strong> to serve New Mexico.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Statues_of_Onate\"><\/span>Statues of O\u00f1ate<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are <strong>statues<\/strong> of O\u00f1ate, mounted on his <strong>Andalusian horse<\/strong>, at the O\u00f1ate Monument Visitors Center in <strong>Alcalde<\/strong>, <strong>New Mexico<\/strong>, northeast of <strong>Espa\u00f1ola<\/strong>, and in <strong>El Paso<\/strong>, <strong>Texas<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 In 2008, <strong>PBS<\/strong> produced a documentary film, <strong><i>The Last Conquistador<\/i><\/strong>, about the controversy surrounding the installation of the O\u00f1ate statue in El Paso.
