\"Landing<\/a>Notary with Christopher Columbus 1492<\/h1>\n

On October 12th<\/strong>, 1492<\/strong>, Rodrigo de Escobedo<\/strong> of Segovia was the first notary<\/strong> in North America.\u00a0 He sailed on the flagship Santa Maria<\/strong>, as Secretary of the Fleet, landing with Christopher Columbus<\/strong>, and recording the event in legal documents.\u00a0 He witnessed documents as a royal notary<\/strong> for King Ferdinand<\/strong> of Aragon and Queen Isabella<\/strong> of Castile (Spain<\/a><\/strong><\/span>).<\/p>\n

<\/span>Landing of Columbus<\/span><\/h2>\n

The painting, “Landing of Columbus<\/strong>” on the Islands of Guanahani, West Indies, (renamed San Salvador by Columbus) by John Vanderlyn<\/strong>, completed in 1846, hangs in the rotunda of the US Capitol.\u00a0 It shows the notary Escobedo<\/strong> standing directly behind the right shoulder of Columbus, which indicates his importance.\u00a0 Behind the notary is a friar, bearing a crucifix<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Washington Irving<\/span><\/h2>\n

Washington Irving<\/strong> described the landing of Columbus in his 1828 book.\u00a0 “On landing, Columbus threw himself on his knees, kissed the earth, and returned thanks to God with tears of joy. His example was followed by the rest, whose hearts indeed overflowed with the same feelings of gratitude.”<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n

“Columbus then rising drew his sword, displayed the royal standard, and assembling around him the two captains, with Rodrigo de Escobedo<\/strong>, notary<\/strong> of the armament, Rodrigo Sanchez of Segovia, the royal inspector (veedor), and the rest who had landed, he took solemn possession in the name of the Castilian sovereigns, giving the island the name of San Salvador<\/strong>.”<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n

“Having complied with the requisite forms and ceremonies, he called upon all present to take the oath of obedience to him, as admiral and viceroy, representing the persons of the sovereigns.”<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Columbian Exposition Stamps<\/span><\/h2>\n

\"Landing<\/a>The World\u2019s Columbian Exposition<\/strong>, held in Chicago in 1893, was the first critically and economically successful U.S. world\u2019s fair.\u00a0 The exposition was to celebrate the 400th anniversary<\/strong> of the Columbus landing in the New World.<\/p>\n

The US Postal Service<\/strong> issued a special series of 13 postage stamps to honor this event.\u00a0 Each stamp in the series shows a different scene commemorating events related to the Columbus landing<\/strong> in America.\u00a0 The two-cent stamp is shown.\u00a0 Stamps issued: 1893<\/p>\n

The US Postal Service has this description of a Columbus<\/strong> stamp.\u00a0 “As the legal officer<\/strong> or notary<\/strong> aboard the Santa Maria<\/strong>, Rodrigo de Escobedo<\/strong> (Escobar) witnessed discoveries and recorded all official transactions in the name of Spain<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/span>Columbus Arrival and Departure<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Ni\u00f1a<\/strong> (56 ft) and Pinta<\/strong> (56 ft), both 3-masted caravels,<\/strong>\u00a0and the Santa Mar\u00eda<\/strong>, a 3-masted 62 ft cargo ship known as a nao<\/strong>,\u00a0 sailed on September 6, 1492, from the Old World to the New World.\u00a0 With a total crew of 120 men, they arrived on the shores of Guanahani Island<\/strong> (Bahamas) on October 12.\u00a0 Escobedo<\/strong> duly witnessed the great event at the site that was named Fernandez Bay<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Columbus sailed back to Spain in January 1493 to report the discovery of the New World.<\/strong>\u00a0 Escobedo<\/strong> was among the 39 crew members that stayed behind at La Navidad, with hopes of finding gold.<\/p>\n

Those who were left behind perished, most of them killed by the natives.\u00a0 La Navidad and the surrounding Indian village were burned.\u00a0 Columbus found the ruins when he returned in November 1493.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Notary Feared by Natives<\/span><\/h2>\n

In one account of a later exploration trip by Columbus, a notary<\/strong> is asked to record answers to questions asked of the natives.\u00a0 The notary took out his quill pen<\/strong>, inkpot,<\/strong> and parchment<\/strong> to prepare to write.<\/p>\n

The natives were puzzled by this procedure and afraid that it may be some sort of evil ceremony<\/strong>.\u00a0 They ran away.\u00a0 They later re-appeared bringing with them their own form of magic<\/strong> to counter any evil spell<\/strong> brought by the new explorers.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Leif Erikson arrives before Columbus<\/span><\/h2>\n

Around 1000, five hundred years before Columbus, Leif Erikson<\/strong> (Ericson) of Norway may have established a colony in the land he called Vinland<\/strong>, on the northern tip of Newfoundland<\/strong>.\u00a0 There is no mention of a notary that accompanied the Vikings<\/strong> to North America.\u00a0 October 9th is celebrated as Leif Erikson Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Ships from Mali Empire may have arrived before Columbus<\/span><\/h2>\n

In 1311, Mansa Abubakari II, the Voyager King of the Mali Empire<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, sailed west from Africa with a fleet of 2,000 ships and never returned. Some stories claim they landed at Recife, Brazil.\u00a0 When Columbus arrived, natives gave him gold (guanin) spearheads they received from black visitors from the sea.\u00a0 The gold-silver-copper guanin matched the same alloy used by warriors in Mali.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Amerigo Vespucci<\/span><\/h2>\n

The name America<\/strong>\u00a0was chosen in honor of Amerigo Vespucci<\/strong> (Americus Vespucius), who made several voyages to the New World, after Columbus.\u00a0 He was the son of a wealthy notary <\/strong>from Florence, Italy.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Vasco da Gama<\/span><\/h2>\n

Columbus sailed west from Europe and mistakenly thought he had reached India<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and called the natives Indians. Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama<\/strong> sailed south and east from Portugal around the southern tip of Africa, arriving in Calicut, India on May 20, 1498.<\/p>\n

The Portuguese<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, especially under Prince Henry the Navigator<\/strong>, began exploring the oceans long before Spain and kept their valuable sea knowledge secret from other countries. Vasco da Gama opened the highly lucrative\u00a0spice trade<\/strong>\u00a0sea route to India.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Ni\u00f1a and Pinta Replicas<\/span><\/h2>\n
