The customer is <strong>personally known<\/strong> to the notary, not a casual\u00a0acquaintance or a\u00a0recognized famous person.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\">2. The customer shows a <strong>current identification card<\/strong> or document, issued by the US federal government, a state government entity or a Native American Tribal ID, containing a <strong>photograph<\/strong> and <strong>signature<\/strong> of the signer.\u00a0 This may include a military ID, merchant mariner ID, US passport, government employee ID, driver&#8217;s license, state-issued ID, or county issued ID, such as a concealed carry weapons permit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\">3. A <strong>sworn statement<\/strong> of a <strong>credible witness<\/strong> who is\u00a0personally\u00a0known to the notary and who states that he\/she knows the signer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notaries should also use <strong>reasonable care<\/strong> to identify a person serving as an <strong>agent<\/strong>, <strong>trustee<\/strong>, or <strong>corporate officer<\/strong>, signing on behalf of another person or entity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Unacceptable<\/strong> forms of primary identification include a <strong>birth certificate<\/strong>, <strong>Social Security card<\/strong>, the latest version of military ID (no signature), rent or utility receipts, and ID from\u00a0Mexico including a Matricula Consular or Border Crossing Card.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Petition_ID\"><\/span>Petition ID<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: <strong>Different rules<\/strong> for acceptable forms of identification are used when notarizing an affidavit on a <strong>circulated petition<\/strong> under CRS 1-1-104(19.5).\u00a0 Personal knowledge and a credible witness are <strong>not acceptable<\/strong> methods of identification for the petition circulator.\u00a0 The address on the ID, if shown, must be in Colorado.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Name_Discrepancies\"><\/span>Name Discrepancies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>name on the document<\/strong> should be equal to, or less than, <strong>not more than<\/strong>, the <strong>name on the ID<\/strong>.\u00a0 For example, if the name on the document is James Andrew Smith, but the name on the ID is James Smith, additional evidence is required to show the middle name of Andrew.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a <strong>secondary ID<\/strong>, some credit cards include a photo and a signature.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Thumbprint\"><\/span>Thumbprint<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a <strong>best practice<\/strong>, the notary should also take a <strong>thumbprint<\/strong> of the customer.\u00a0 This provides evidence that the customer met face to face with the notary, and is a\u00a0deterrent to criminals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The primary role of a notary is to <strong>prevent fraud<\/strong>.\u00a0 The notary should use reasonable care to verify the identity of the customer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Visit our website for <a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Colorado Springs Mobile Notary<\/strong><\/a> services or <a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/Colorado_Notary_Training.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Colorado Notary Training<\/strong><\/a> classes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a9 Copyright 2013 ABC Legal Docs, LLC All rights reserved.
