Carta<\/strong> (Great Charter) was written by the <strong>Archbishop of Canterbury,\u00a0Stephen Langton,<\/strong> and agreed to by <strong>King John<\/strong> of England at a meadow called <strong>Runnymede<\/strong>, near Windsor, on June 15, 1215.\u00a0 This year marks the <strong>800th anniversary<\/strong> of the signing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Magna-Carta_150x150.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1084\" src=\"data:image\/gif,GIF89a%01%00%01%00%80%00%00%00%00%00%FF%FF%FF%21%F9%04%01%00%00%00%00%2C%00%00%00%00%01%00%01%00%00%02%01D%00%3B\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/abclegaldocs.com\/blog-Colorado-Notary\/wp-content\/uploads\/Magna-Carta_150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Magna Carta 150x150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The Magna Carta was based on the <strong>rule of law<\/strong>, rather than the rule of man (the king).\u00a0 Although it was primarily written to protect the rights and property of <strong>barons<\/strong> from a <strong>tyrannical king<\/strong>, it also contains some provisions for the <strong>common man<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It became part of English law and later influenced the writing of the American <strong>Constitution<\/strong> in 1789, which became the <strong>supreme law<\/strong> of the land.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Exemplifications\"><\/span>Exemplifications<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Multiple copies (<strong>exemplifications<\/strong>) of the Magna Carta were made, written in <strong>Latin<\/strong> on sheepskin <strong>vellum<\/strong> sheets, using <strong>quill pens<\/strong>, each sealed with the <strong>royal seal<\/strong>, using beeswax and resin.\u00a0 Only 4 of the original exemplifications remain today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The original Magna Carta was one long text.\u00a0 In 1759, <strong>Sir William Blackstone<\/strong>\u00a0divided the document into 63 numbered clauses.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Magna_Carta_Clauses\"><\/span>Magna Carta Clauses<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here are some excerpts from clauses in the <strong>Magna Carta<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(1)\u00a0 TO ALL <strong>FREE MEN<\/strong> OF OUR KINGDOM we have also granted, for us and our heirs forever, all the <strong>liberties<\/strong> written out below, to have and to keep for them and their heirs, of us and our heirs:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(9)\u00a0 Neither we nor our officials will seize any land or rent in payment of a debt, so long as the <strong>debtor<\/strong> has movable goods sufficient to discharge the debt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(20)\u00a0 For a trivial <strong>offence<\/strong>, a <strong>free man<\/strong> shall be fined only in proportion to the degree of his offence, and for a serious offence correspondingly, but not so heavily as to deprive him of his <strong>livelihood<\/strong>.\u00a0 In the same way, a <strong>merchant<\/strong> shall be spared his merchandise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(27)\u00a0 If a <strong>free man<\/strong> dies <strong>intestate<\/strong>, his movable goods are to be distributed by his next-of-kin and friends, under the supervision of the <strong>Church<\/strong>.
